    Eyegirl,

I guess I should pack my bags and get out then.

I guess I have a slightly biased view of the matter because I am am not a citizen of the US. I am a first generation immigrant from Germany, and have been in the US since 1973, as a permanent green card carriying resident. I have served with the US Army for 3 years and consider myself a contributing member of this society. I pay taxes, volenteer at my son's school and do what I can to make this country a better place. This country was built on the infux of many cultures and nationalities. 9/11 had nothing to do with "legal" immigration. It was a combination of evil men bent upon the destruction of wetsern society, and a breakdown in the communication within the security forces of this country.

I'm afraid that immigrants will become the scapegoats of misguided patriotism when all is said and done.

My father, his mother and siblings came to this country from Norway in 1892. They were all taken to Ellis island and held there while being tested for health reasons "tuburculosis etc." and their eligibility to emigrate to this country. This was not inhumane and was an expected and accepted practice by the people that wished to live in the US legally.

My father and all the emigrants he knew all wanted to learn english and become an american and be assimilated into this society and it's culture. While they did have groups or clubs that consisted of mostly Norwegion members, They did not want to form all Norwegion neighborhoods or exclude or replace the american culture.

The use of borders and rules and laws are to protect the citizens and the country itself. The control of ILLEGAL aliens is a necessary responsibility of the government. As is any other ILLEGAL act.

If one does not believe this, try an Illegal entry into any other country. I assure you that you will not enjoy their version of justice or their prison system.

should deport anyone who isn't a citizen. don't know that my thoughts have changed much.....call me igornant or whatever you want. i pay taxes to live here and follow the laws. if you want to do the same, welcome--if not, get the hell out!!

Eyegirl, you're right, the above comment truly is ignorant on your part. Alien residents who are here legally pay just as many taxes as you pay hun. They have social security cards and their status is exactly the same as a citizen (they can even serve in the military mind you) except they cannot vote.

Besides is it up to you to decide who should become or not become a citizen? That is a personal decision every person has the right to make for themselves. Do you know how much it costs to get your citizenship nowadays? I think it's somewhere around $1000 each person. Imagine a family of four having to come up with $1000 each just so they could vote! Obviously, it might not be a priority. And I think someone out there doesn't want the immigrants voting or they would make it easier for them to become citizens.

One more point, even the illegal immigrants pay taxes every time they buy something.

Those carrying residential green cards are not an issue here. Of course all legal w/green cards or illegal immigrants should be given a case by case decision. Those who have already been approved to be residents of this country should remain. Those who haven't should be found & a decision made.

What I'm speaking of is the mass influx every year of new immigrants. At what point do we say enough is enough - we can't handle anymore? Also, with the inability to enforce laws to keep the scum out (i.e. the 9/11 terrorists all had either residency and/or green cards) at what point do we say - no more?

And, this is one of the most lenient countries in the world (i think - don't know for sure) in the ability to establish residense & citizenship here. I am beginning to think that we should just close off the borders and focusing on taking care of our own. This wouldn't be anti-american to me - this would be taking care of America & securing it for all legal citizens children & the future. We could reopen those boundries anytime.

    Interesting points

I think that things have changed since the United States was first colonized and relied on immigration to populate it....nothing stays the same and so perhaps the immigration laws should be changed to reflect the changing times we live in.

I have worked with some "illegal" Mexican workers, they were/are very hardworking people (although I do agree they should try and learn English). I feel with their "illegal" status makes it is very easy for them to be taken advantage of, another reason to change the laws, for their protection.

With the new age of terrorism I feel immigration needs to be tightened and our borders should be better patrolled. But as someone else pointed out this can get very complicated and difficult to control. Unfortunately there is no easy solution to the problem now facing the US.

    Petty,

I agree with your husband, if he's talking about not letting illegals in.

Regardless of the reason why the Statue of Liberty is here, it still represents the fact that our country is a shelter and a haven, and the opportunity to prosper. I did not make that statement to get into a History argument, thank you kindly. Attacking me by referring to the fact that I lack an "education" was rude and uncouth. How arrogant of you to assume that I was talking about History 101. I was talking about symbolism.

If you don't like immigrants being here, then go back to your country of origin.

Illegal immigrants and legal ones are of course a totally seperate issue. If you want citizenship here, do it legally and properly.
