Too bad the upload from your hard drive doesn't work the way it should.

when I see someone using their fancy little animated logo it just makes me think of someone who's words aren't strong enough and they have to resort to stupid little gimmicks to get people's attention.

    Um....er........sure Jesus Christ

Actually, I chose my name to piss off fundies. Someone once asked if they would pay attention if Jesus himself came on this board and told them what idiots they were. Apparently not.

Also, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that you SHOULD do something. I can walk down the street wearing nothing but an accordian that's strategicaly placed in the dead of winter but that doesn't mean that I should. Not only that but look at well established web sites. With the exception of ads which are meant to do everything they can to catch your eye how many times do you see animated .gif's?

Oh, I fully agree with your orginal post about not direct linking. My pic

on this site is of an animated gif, but the gif site owner has requested

that the gifs are "free to use as long as they are not directly-linked".( I am

abiding by the rules of not direct linking)

I just don't agree that someone usuing an animated gif is:

having to resort to stupid little gimmicks to get people's attention.

The same could be said about people that use "Jesus" or "Jehovah"

    as a username.

I agree with you, but you have to admit that a gif is nicer when animated, and yours isn't. Whats the use of having a GIF when not animated. Choose a JPG instead.

My original point I wanted to stress, is that if you save a GIF to your hard disc, then when you upload it, it will not be animated here on this site. Your GIF is probably animated when you look at it on your hard disc. But uploading it like you did, takes away the animation out of it.

Some animated gifs are cool but when overdone they quickly become annoying and can also affect performance.

The reason that the animated gifs don't work when uploaded to this site is that the software automatically optimises the image and reduces the size so that it loads quicker (typically 1 or 2k)

I have considered only allowing images to be uploaded and this may still happen ... I think it would make the forum faster overall (there are benefits to having all images loaded off the same server) especially for lower bandwidth users.

There is also the problem of people linking to other people's sites and I have had one or two complaints that I've had to deal with when this has been done.

I do agree to that, but I also agreed that when I downloaded the gif

from millan.net, that I would abide by their "terms of usage"

But uploading it like you did, takes away the animation out of it.

yes, it did, but until Simon updates this forum to upload animated

gifs, I choose to be stuck with what i have.

'Jesus' did what I thought was a pretty good job explaining why direct

linking was not a good idea in his first post on this thread.

When looking for gifs, I will look for the word "free." I thought if that word was there in the description, not only was I able to copy and paste it, but I thought that meant the owner of the site gave you permission to do so.

I found this on a "free" gif site I go to often called www.gifs.net:

For your pleasure I have collected a number of animated GIF files. Recently I discovered that many of these images were created by the members of the Animated Gif Artists Guild. These gifs are for your personal use only. They are Royalty Free Copyrighted Animated Gifs for non-commercial use. If you are looking for Animated GIFs for commercial use, check out the AGAG home page and hire one of its members to create exactly what you need. As for the Gifs I have collected, I claim no rights in any of them. If any of these files are subject to rights or claims of others, drop me a note at [email protected] and I will remove the questionable image at once.

Notice the Royalty Free copyrighted Animated Gifs for non-commerical use.

I take this to mean it is ok with the owner of this gif site to use any I wanted.

If I am doing anything wrong here, maybe someone could explain it to me.

    Thanks

    Mrs. Shakita
