Actually, Iron, when every time I attempt Blockbuster and they either double-charge my card, give me the wrong tape, or charge me for late fees when I returned everything on time, then yeah, I've never had a good experience with them. Apparently I must have tried the wrong locations at the wrong time, but they're the only video rental place I've had any issues with (or they made with me).

Several years ago, we rented a video game from one of the local video stores (SuperVideo). My son played the game and then we returned it, on time. About six weeks later we receive a letter stating that we had 3 days to either return the game or pay for it, otherwise legal action would be taken. Apparently they somehow lost the game, and we were the last one on record to have rented it. There was no way to prove that we had returned it, so we had to buy another one and give it to them. It still pisses me off every time I see that store.
Anytime we rent anything now, we keep the receipt and make someone sign it when we return it. I've gotten some strange looks, but I just tell them I'm not going to pay for it if someone loses it or steals it after I've returned it.
You can definitely get screwed by video stores.

Lucky Lucy,
Blockbuster is well known for this sort of shenanigan. You are right, they are making a ton of money from late charges. The company got in trouble in Missouri for this sort of thing. Now, all I have to do is tell the clerk that I returned it on time and the charge is removed. I haven't had trouble out of Blockbuster for years now.
Have you spoken to the manager or the district manager?

Note from a former Blockbuster employee...make a big enough stink, they'll take it off. Ask for the on-duty manager. This will ALWAYS work. The people behind the register aren't authorized to delete the fees, but the manager is, and when I was there, it was a pretty much a given that when someone is making a stink, you wipe out the charges, to 1) stop the scene, 2) show of good faith 3)keep them coming back.

Well, well...
Blockbuster also tried to charge me a late fee for some movies they said I had returned late. It had been a few months since I had rented anything, I was taken by suprise. I KNEW I had returned them on time. I told them as much and said they could keep the other DVDs I was planning to rent. The guy waiting on me called the manager and he waved the fees. I'm sure most people just pay them. Nice little scheme to pad their pockets.
However, Blockbuster is not the only company that tries to pull this sort of BS. Back in 1986 I rented two videos from a local establishment that is not a national company. I returned them on time and thought nothing of it. Then in 1989, my husband and I are buying our first home. I have this bad mark on my credit report from a collection agency. I'm thinking: "WTF"? I had gotten no notices, so I had no idea what it was for. I called the agency listed and they informed me it was for two videos that I failed to return to this local video store. The girl on the phone got quite nasty with me. The bill was for $150.00 dollars. This was in the days when VHS movies were still relatively expensive.
Well, there was certainly no way in hell I was going to pay that bill. I knew the guy that ran the video store, so I called him up and asked for some sort of explanation. This is what he tells me: "We did an inventory, those movies were missing, you were the last person to rent them, so you kept them." I about blew my top. I asked why wasn't I ever sent a notice or why someone didn't take the time to call me on the phone! He says: "Oh we did!". "Bull!" I said, "I had the same phone number for five years and I have an answering machine, you never attempted to contact me, NOT ONCE!"
The guy knows I got him, so he tells me there is nothing he can do because they "debt" had been turn over to a collection agency and if he tells them to let it go, HE will have to give them the money. I inform him that he might be paying that bill anyway after I talk to an attorney. And I never threaten legal action unless I mean BUSINESS.
Then the nasty notices from the collection agency start coming in the mail. "Pay this bill now!" one notice had hand written on it. I called and my explanation of the situation went on deaf ears. So, I go to an attorney friend who says with the long sigh "Andee, just pay the bill." "No way! I don't have their damn movies!" So, my attorney friend, to appease me, writes this very threatening letter, sites points of law, and demands that they remove any negative mark off my credit report. I send it to the collection agency and CC a copy to the video store.
I never heard from them again. And the next time I checked my credit report the offending mark was gone.

Oh yeah, I get receipts now too.
