Watch out for the those Multi Level marketing schemes like Amway. I was involved with them about 20 years ago and they have cult recruting techniques like the JW's. I was only in it for a short time and got out. What they don't tell you is that less than 1% of those that join ever make any money.

Not just the MLMs, but also the real sales oriented companies that people buy into like Tupperware or Avon. My mom sold Tupperware for 15 years and got many poeple involved...Many of them probably should not have tried to sell or manage other people's money...but the methods for convincing them they can and will make lots of cash are the same.

    Swan,

My cousin got involved in one of the most lucrative schemes. My family claimed it was legal, which may be true, but was it ethical? You decide. I made my mind up long ago that I wanted no part of it. He made a deal with a local charity that he would donated x hundred dollars a year for use of their name. Then he opened a second hand store under their name. Caring people would donate all the merchandise, he sold it, paid the operating expenses, and gave the charity their x hundred dollars per year.

Ethically I'd have a problem with it if he didn't tell people about the fact he wasn't affiliated with this non-profit group. But he could say that if he did so people wouldn't donate, he couldn't sell, and the charity couldn't get their money from him. I'd question the ethics of a charity using this tactic too.

Legally if both parties to the contract had the ability under the law to make such a deal then I see no problem in that area. In fact, the same or similar tactics are used by charities today. They get $XXXX from a fundraiser, who's then free to solicit funds using that charity's name. And if the fundraising group takes in more dollars than they gave the charity that surplus is theirs to keep. They are under no obligation to give it to the charity.

If you're uncomfortable with it (as I would be) then no one can criticize you for not getting involved. Too many people leave their morals at the door when money is discussed.

I hope Englishman and Expatrit are kidding about helping some African guy get money out of Angola, or any other African country. You ARE kidding right?

Six: Yes they have some very nice beaches in Morocco. One of them in the chic part of Casablanca is named Miami Beach, curiously enough.

Mulan: There are four big guys at my front door asking "where's da moolah, bwana?" Can you talk to them for me?

I once was talked into buying a load of aerosol type fire extinguishers to sell from door to door. I took a little tin, and when the householder answered the door, I would set light to the methylated spirits it contained, then extinguish it with the aerosol. The householders thought that I was mad.

I sold 1, and emptied all the others doing the demonstration.

I am one of the 1% who actually makes money in MLM. I do it with a really good website, that gets lots of sales. Not true MLM, but I still get the commission check. I'll take it!!

I once took a job as a telemarketer selling cheep long distance service. I did one day of work and went home exhausted and emotionally drained. I'm not a natural salesman and I don't take rejection well.

That night the local news did a program on how that very company was a scam and to watch out for them.

I went back to the office the next day and they were closed... i did get paid for that one day of work... but they were out of town the following day.

Another job had me selling computers and making only commission. On the first day of work I showed up at the office, which was almost completely empty. They handed me a Yellow Pages phone book and told me to go find some clients and sent me out the door.

After driving around all day trying to sell computers to companies I found in the Yellow Pages, I went back to the office and quit... minus a take of gas.
