    Thanks guys

This has been real helpful. Lostin I'll keep checking the URL.

Simon I am not familiar with laptops at all but could do with something that is similar to my PC (Pentium3) am I wishful thinking or do they make them similar to desktops? Need floppy and CDrom.

I'll look for a Dell, dont need it too snazzy as long as it does word and office.

Yes, you can get smoething pretty similar to a Desktop PC (although a bit more expensive for the equivalent): CRROM, DVD, Writer, CD Acceleration, Large Screen (1600x) and so on

Don't forget though that with a laptop you also, effectively, get a built in UPS too !

I really liked my Dell I had for work, it survived the open roads of Utah and Arizona in the blazing heat, and off road, with a GPS hooked to it, and I liked the large screen.

    Brummie,

If all you want is a replacement for your home/work PC and want the added capability of a mobile solution, then why dont you look at buying a laptop with a decent "docking station" - basically you could have it set-up at home/work with a 15/17/21" monitor connected to the station, then depending on the model any peripherals that are not part of the laptop could be connected to the station aswell - but you always have the flexibility of being mobile.

Going to sound like a Dell/Compaq/Tosh salesman now - but they have cornered the market with "docking station's" - dont think Ive seen one for a Sony.

You mention that you only use Word/Office - then maybe all the addon's like a DVD drive/CD-Writer etc dont appeal - but you always have to look to the actual life of the laptop - space on HD - future enhancements to software - so Memory expansion etc.

There's no point in buying a laptop with DVD/CD-R(w) combo if youre not going to use it - money is better used to expand on Memory and size of HD - again its down to your personal requirements.

    Think :

What am I going to be using laptop for

Is it a replacement for PC or just a mobile solution?

I think we can talk about this until the cows come home - but because it's such an expensive piece of equipment to buy - its better in the long run for you to really understand your requirements before venturing out with your Credit Card!
