Hi! Minimus,What I never could understand is preaching to the converted at the meetings. For ex: At every meeting they would always tell( us who were there )to continue to be at the meetings and in the field service. We didn't need to hear this .We are here !We are out there! And then in the prayers they weren't talking to JEHOVAH or JESUS they were talking to US! "So help us to always put the meetings first ,to be in the field night and day."The prayers were always continued rehash of making the ones who were always there feel guilty so we would do more. The prayers were like giving a talk to US! They were not prayers to God at all. When I missed meetings it was because I was wiped out. Many times I went anyway depriving myself of much needed sleep.Blueblades
What Excuses Did You Have For Missing Meetings?

I missed the meeting for 3 weeks because I got a wicked sunburn. I was better in like a week, but I milked it, saying my clothes were uncomfortable. The best one to use was female problems, and cramps. I also would say I was PMSing and didn't want to risk the chance of snapping at one of my beloved brother or sister. Untill of course they invented the phone line tie in system. My mom used to make me listen in if I didn't go. I'd listen to th efirst 10 minutes then hang up and go online. Then call back for the last 10 minutes. I also always volunteered for any overtime at my old job so I could say I was working late.
I'd get off at 6:00 and hang out at the arcade store till 7:30 so it would be too late to make it......

That is so true, Blueblades. They use the prayers to chastise the flock in spite of this counsel:

Another word of caution that might be added is that since such prayers are offered to Jehovah God, they should not be used as an excuse for preaching to the listeners or for presenting some purely personal ideas -

we have kids and kids get sick, towards the end it was mostly me not feeling good (I wasn't feeling good about the whole shabang)

Child is ill and must stay home with them
Thqt one used to crack me up............the people who used that one, had been at work all day and left the kid home sick. Or if they had tickets to a concert, it wouldn't keep them home.
My husband was the TM School Overseer for years, so he could never miss. He thought it was very unfair that I got to miss a meeting when a child was sick.
I used to say there was a show on TV I wanted to watch. Didn't work.............on my husband. When I was a kid, that worked..............Mom was a sucker for letting me watch educational shows. Remember "Hemo, the Magnificent"? Of course I had to watch it, because she wanted to know about it too. It was about blood................a Disney show I think............late 1950's. I told Mom I had to watch it for school. It never would have occurred to her that I would lie. I was so good. I would also sneak in Ozzie and Harriet!!

My hubby was so bad that when he was done conducting the school, he would come home to the sick child, so I could go enjoy the service meeting! (what devoted slaves we were then). We had to set a good example

Never missed any meetings, I almost always had some part on the program, was ministry school servant, watchtower study conductor and usually introduced the sunday speaker.
Sure was nice when I moved to DC for a while and could miss meetings when I wanted. That ended it for me.
