Yet another thread on duct tape.

A while back we had a thread on the wonders of duct tape. It is some handy stuff and every household should have a roll.

It so happened that my daughter's doctor had just called me to suggest using duct tape to clear up the warts on her fingers. We started trying to get rid of them last May. Zoe is four and had one on her index finger and two on her middle finger. The doctor tried freezing them (that was not fun) but they spread and grew. She sent us to a dermatologist who spent three months using acid and a prescription cream that is supposed to thin the skin. They grew to be enormous and a couple new ones popped up. By this time we had spent hundreds and the problem was worse so I decided to give up and let nature take it's course. They will eventually go away.

The day after we made this decision there was an article in USA today about using duct tape to get rid of warts. The next day my doctor called and suggested we try it as it is painless and was supposed to be more effective than freezing. She said to wrap the tape around ONE wart. You don't have to cover them all. Leave the tape on for six days and take it off for one. Repeat about three times. Well, it took much longer. I decided to just do six days on and one day off for as long as it took. It worked. They are almost completely gone and the new small ones that had appeared are completely gone.

One warning, if you try this be prepared for some stink. They start to really smell bad when the tape starts working. The last couple of weeks her fingers smelled like a cast on a broken bone.

After spending hundreds of dollars at the dermatologist, we found the cure was in the garage the whole time. The roll had been paid for years ago and the cost was pennies. We probably used six to ten inches of tape.

Really? What does the trick? Starving the wart of oxygen or the chemical in the adhesive? Weird.

It really was amazing how it worked. I think it's a starvation of oxygen. But who knows? The odd thing is you only have to do it to one of them.

Wow , Princess thanks so much for this info, my daughter has a wart on her index finger right now, I have done the disk on a bandaid to get rid of it, the liquid wart remover, and it helped some. The biggest part of the wart fell off and I thought it was gone, but the darn thing is growing back. I will try this for sure,,,,,, I was just about to make an appointment to get it freezed off. This will be less traumatic for her I am sure.

Yes, the wonders of duct tape, give me a roll of duct tape and I can make anything work!!!!!!!!

    I have a question.

Do you leave ONE piece of tape on for 6 days or do you change it daily?

    Thanks

Likely that smell is just dead skin. My whole right arm was like that when it was in a cast.

I had a wart on my right thumb about the size of the head on a hat pin. This was all before I was in the first grade. It had been on my thumb for ages. My mother put all sorts of stuff on it. No luck. She rubbed a bullfrog with a dirty dishcloth and then rubbed the wart with it and then threw the dishcloth under the front steps. Still nothing. One day about two months after the frog trick, I looked at my thumb one day and the wart was gone. No explanation, no good byes, nothing. It was just gone.

Pandora, we changed it when needed. It usually fell off in the tub or after swimming lessons. You can definitely change it daily.

I assumed the smell was from the dead skin too. Took me right back to elemenary school when my friend had a cast on his arm. Smelled the same...gross.

I don't know if it is smothering or not. Since you only cover one wart and it gets rid of them all at the same time I tend to think it is something in the tape that stimulates the immune system or something. I was talking to her teacher about it and she said she heard red duct tape works even better. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

Dede, I'm glad you are going to try this on your daughter. Let me know how it works for her. It isn't as fast as freezing, but then, freezing made it worse for my daughter.
