Ballastic you are doing it the right way. Just remember the mindset because bad urges may always be there so you just have to watch out for that.

There are zillions of things to spend money on with dieting. Weightloss centers cost a fortune quite often. Look at all those diet books. Then of course as you've mentioned lots of "slimming" products such as diets in a can, prepared diet meals. No end to that stuff. Video tapes, thigh master the list goes on and on.

Losing wasn't the problem for me. It was keeping it off. When you have an eating disorder that isn't an easy thing to manage.

LB, I appreciate your posts on this. It is hard to understand the difficulties of losing weight if you have never faced it in your life. We're not talking 10 or 20 pounds but 50 or more pounds. I was fairly normal weight growing up in my sexually, verbally, emotionally abusive home. My "secret," I was aneroxic-bulimic. I could have the best of both worlds, eat what I wanted and be slim. Fortunately, I got help before I wrecked my body totally. But I found out that I used weight to protect myself from sexual overtures. After all, men don't make passes at fat girls, do they?

So, your comments are good, and keep this thread from becoming "fat JWs mean smoking is all right." Obesity is a real problem in the developed world and getting worse, not just among JWs. Being obese is not a character flaw.

As one woman said at a support group, "it's not what we eat, it's what eats us."

Funny how that works isn't it? When I was over 300 pounds I spent a day cutting wood with a JW kid that weighed about 180 and appeared to be in perfect shape. When lunch came the sister came out with tons of sandwiches. I ate one and was honestly stuffed. He ate 4. When she came out and saw the food was gone she asked if we wanted anymore. He told her that he would enjoy a couple of more if that's ok.

So I'm fat and a glutton? Too funny isn't it. I enjoyed your statement I quoted above.

I think it should be clarified that unsustainable diets don't work.

Everyone is on a diet all the time - your diet is simply what you eat. Combining a good diet with exercise will make you loose weight.

You aren't well informed on this Simon. For the morbidly obese this isn't true. If you want to just lose those chubby little love handles then it applies.

My surgeons link is www.gastricbypass.com another site that deals with this topic is www.obesityhelp.com and there are zillions of others.

I'm overweight and it is not by choice. If I want to lose weight, I have to almost starve myself to do it. A few years ago, I was down to a size 6 and to maintain that I could only eat once a day or I would gain weight.

There are other factors in why some people are overweight. Low metabolism is one. There are also those who have thyroid problems that keep them from losing weight. I have a very low metabolism, I am not lazy. I clean houses for a living so I should burn a lot of calories. It doesn't seem to be working and I am not someone who eats a lot. So, why am I over weight? I want to lose but I'm tired of starving.

You know how witnesses always say how wonderfully made Jehovah created out bodies? Well that's so wrong it's silly. For one having a spinal cord that is designed for animals that walk on all fours creates back problems for those who only use two legs.

Another more important one is how the human body stores fat. It hangs onto that fat as though it was gold. Sure you can lose weight quickly with almost any diet. But many times the weight is muscle. If you don't exercise every single muscle you will lose strength there very quickly by dieting. That is why you feel so weak when you diet. Any underused muscle will be eaten up as your body tries to hang onto it's precious store of fat.

A lot of you guys are so misinformed on how the body works and how to lose weight properly it's sad. Starving yourself will only do one thing. Spike your metabolism into the ground and make your body conserve fat. There is no such thing as a diet that is sustainable. The only thing that works is changing your lifestyle. You may lose weight on a "diet" but most of it will be muscle and you will gain all your weight back again when you are done. Only this time, you will gain fat. Not only will you gain fat, but because you dumped your muscle in an attempt to lose weight no matter what that weight was, the fat will be harder to lose the next time around. If you guys want some real information on how to lose FAT not weight, check this website out. www.fatwars.com. Unlike what you have been led to believe, even the morbidly obese can lose weight with a proper diet ( and by this I mean the way you eat as Simon said) and exercise. It IS possible. But it takes knowledge and the will to change.
