These flame wars rock?

Certainly flame wars distract from some of the meaningful posts here. That's a negative. But with all the emotional tailspins a stint in the Watchtower can put you through, it is understandable that people will sometimes wear their emotions on their sleeve. Sometimes it's just people standing up for a friend that is being slammed needlessly by a mentally disturbed individual. I think even though this is a public forum, privately emailing an individual with a disagreement is the way to handle it first. Even the JWs are aware of that good piece of advice.

I think there's something to be said for the fact that this community is on the computer and that creates a certain distance. That makes people feel more comfortable in being able to be rude, abrasive and obnoxious which then leads into flame wars. It's my experience that most people are much more aggressive and rude while talking to you on the phone than they would ever be in person. I think if this forum were held in person (not video, but in person) there would be far fewer wars. Having said that, it's also likely that the wars that would happen would probably degenerate into a fistfight rather than name calling.

Godd point there Tex, makes the whole thing safer at a distance, maybe thats the attraction, to hurt without having to face the consequences ?

Ive seen peoples dark fears and deepest guilts exposed to public ridicule in flame wars and posters psychologically damaged to the point where they dont post any more out of shame. Worse still, Ive seen posters rejoicing in observing that an opponent has been psychologically damaged by their attack. Flame wars are a trial , by fire, of your own level of self certainty.

    flame wars are never good.

They should not be confused with passionate debate on sensitive topics - they are simply insulting and designed to hurt, often with repeated lies and smears.

The difficulty is often determining 'who started it' so if you take part in a flame war you do risk being treated as a 'trouble maker'. Don't do it ... you know it makes sense!

Good points from all...Its good that people have expressed how they feel about flame wars, maybe others will now stop and realise that there are feelings involved and people are getting hurt regardless of the distance the internet brings between folk.

Don't do it ... you know it makes sense!

    Tis true ...tis true

pity more people didnt say how hurt they had been so the insensitive folk could see how it does affect peoples daily life

There was a yahoo site called will's swearing club specifically for swearing & flaming. It ended up being a battle between the english & the yanks, & it was lots of fun. God, I miss it! I also miss arguing w/ the folks that were posting all the anti-jew anti-israel stuff, even though I understand fully why Simon stopped it, & probably would have done so myself.

No way? I thought we were all best friends, like Blair, Bush & Hussain...

must admit the anti-jew anti-israel was the most tasteless I have seen
