Ever been to a "quick-build"?

The Society/&Brothers used to refer to them as '3 Day Miracles'! When they realized that the Catholic Church was always talking about miracles too, they decided to refer to them as 'Quick Builds'.

Several JW's were hurt on the job over the years on some of these PR projects. Sometimes when you turned on the light switch, the toilet flushed. Of course, not having any windows made things go a little faster.

Our Hall was a 'Slow Build'! It took us 4 years to finish and is as solid as a rock. Yep, no field service for 4 years!

Swung a hammer at quite a few QBs. But the most humurous memory I have is when working on the Woodburn, Oregon, USA Assembly Hall. I was doing finish carpentry on the interior columns lining the auditorium, 12' high, balancing act with pneumatic nailer in hand. An older "worldly-looking" guy came up behind me and started asking me a bunch of questions about what I was doing. Well, he was distracting me, and I rather curtly asked him who he was and what he was doing here? He said he was the CO, and I said, "Oh, OK, nice to meet you, but I'm a little busy right now, and need to concentrate on what I'm doing."

He was Guy Pierce, now a GB member. So maybe I've had the "rare privilege" of personally telling off a member of the GB?

    LOL

PS: I've been df'd for over 2 years now, and all that oak paneling is still there. Guess it was OK to kick us out, but keep the fruits of our labor, eh?

Do they do the ugliest colors at new halls? One remodel I did went from brown and orange to Pink and maroon

This other new hall we built was like bad green everywhere.

onacruise, I was at rh woodburn one, @ least the one around 1985 where they built the hall out front. Also @ the Albany "slow build ALOT, I lived next door. Talk about a pain.

avishai, I only worked on the main auditorium, including the remodel.

Haha, another memory: I was doing some frame work, and had just bought a cool little biscuit joiner. I was in the main auditorium with about 15 other brothers. All the chairs and carpet had been removed, so it was pretty much an echo chamber. Well, I unpacked my new toy and set it on the work table. As I turned away to put down the empty box, my foot caught the extension cord and pulled the joiner off the edge of the table. It bounced right on the most critical part of the tool, the faceplate. I was so pissed, lost awareness of my location, and loudly said, "Well, SHIT!" Echo, echo, echo.

Only a couple of the others even turned around. Everybody kept on working, never said a thing to me about it. Construction is construction, eh? LOL

When I was part of a QB in 1985, everyone was wearing shorts (myself included) and no one ever mentioned a word

The last quick build I was involed with was in 1997. Defintely no shorts were allowed and any t-shirts with "worldly" says was out. Shorts thing was for safety (which made sense) and the t-shirt thing was more of a public / media thing (in case the newspapers came by).

Actually, the biggest "problem" we had (regarding rules being broken) were brothers swearing! lol!

    Former all-night drywall hanger here!

My crew always, without exception, got put in the back closet room. The really hard room with pipes sticking out of the walls and weird angles to everything and the damn FURNACE which had to be worked around. I didn't mind all this. I was 16 and having a good time - didn't need women back then.

IT was different. I liked the guys I was working with and learned a thing or two about construction. Toward the end of my dubdom, I lost interest and just went to hang out for a while.

I've been to several. I mainly worked with the carpet crew so that usually started late sunday. Until then I built stone walls, built partitions, wallpaper. painting, just about everthing. One good thing about it was I learned alot about the building trade. The area I lived in, at the time had the largest Hall built. It was done over a 3-day weekend holiday. The building had three auditoriums and two apartments above. The structure and all the Halls were completed over the three days, The preperation for the building site took 6- months, and the apartments took another month or two to complete, so we didn't get the certificate of occupency for quite a while. But, they still refered to it as a quick build..go figure.
