I'm just not interested in celebriating Christmas.Maybe the witnesses had that one right.

If I had children I would probably give presents , just so they don't feel left out , thought not having them myself did me no harm , maybe it made me stronger. But christmas is just one big fake pushed by big businessess, I am not their pawn to be played with.

Ok you can have a good laught a few drinks and all that but all the while we are being taken advantage of by the comercial world .Imagine the money they would lose if their was no christmas.

Can't wait for that big Turkey tomorrow though.

Sleepy, not everyone is the hapless slave to commercialism. Most people here give gifts as they are able, not because of advertising. In past years, my adult children and I have spent a lot on gifts. This year is lean for all of us, so we are going very light on the gift giving. I am spending about one tenth as much on gifts as I did last year. To say the whole thing is influenced by commercialism, materialism, and advertising does not compute for me. I don't think it computes for the majority of posters here either.

Granted some people want to give gifts at christmas, but I believe thant for most people there is a lot of pressure from the commercial world via the media to do so. looking at what people give is an indication that they are just looking for a token gift so as not to offend some distant relative or friend they never see, just look at the sales of socks at christmas time.

It depends on how you look at it.I had been struggling with guilt feelings about if it is wrong to celebrate. With the help of the posters here I now realise there is nothing wrong with enjoying being with friends and having a good time....gifts or no gifts. I choose to think of it as time to get together with loved ones and to express our appreciation for eachother.Feeling intense love cannot be a bad thing.

I have to agree with you on this one sleepy although I do see others point of view. I never enjoyed Christmas even as a non JW kid and all my life I have thought of it as over commercialised hype. Its just one big scam for the big boys to make money as far as I am concerned.

Have to admit though, I like Birthdays!

I can relate to what you're saying Sleepy. I too have no kids of my own, I come from a family that at present is half witness/half worldly.

Christmas though is one of my favorite times of the year. If you can look past all the commercialism and greed you might find a REAL meaning of Christmas that works for you. I'm an atheist, so Christmas has no religious significance whatsoever. For me Christmas is a good time to get together with family and friends and celebrate the joy of being alive, the joy of knowing there are people out there you truly care about. Christmas can be whatever you make it. For me it's family, friends and love.

Sorry to disagree also, Sleepy, but Christmas, like most of life, is what you make of it. If you choose to see it as sheer commercialism, feel free. That is your choice.

For me, I was blessed to have been raised to believe Christ is the reason for the season. Presents were something to look forward to, but even more eagerly anticipated were the Christmas pagents, the Christmas programs where we actually got to sing Christmas carols for our parents, the Nativity scenes in the town park, the whole town lit up with colored lights and decorations even draped across the main street, the cheerfulness people exuded as they prepared for Christmas eve and Christmas day, and all the other special memories that were part of my Christmas.

Sadly, many of these things are no longer allowed, thanks to those who sued and won the "right" to have my children deprived of many of these same experiences. I truly believe Christ is in the season, if you choose to see Him there. I taught my children to recognize in the common symbols of Christmas (i.e. the wreaths, the lights, the tree, the presents, the carols) how all those things are reminders of the Babe of Bethlehem and what He did for us because of His great love for all mankind.

I cannot be around JW family during the holiday season. It is the one time of year when I get angry over the hogwash they have been forced to swallow, and their utter contempt (spoken and unspoken)of my Christmas observances makes me want to just grab them, shake them until their teeth rattle and yell, "WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?????" That someone intentionally wrote doctrines that are so unBiblical as to make my JW relatives, whom I love, totally unable to recognize and rejoice in any of the beauties of this season infuriates me. Christmas is about Christ. IF you choose to let it be.

Hope this make at least some sense.

Well remember folks, it's not like you have to approach it with an all or nothing attitude. I say do the things that you are interested in doing. If for some reason you feel the need to have a real tree in your house, by all means do it. I guess red and green decorations can have a certain charm to it. I'm sure most people doesn't object to gift giving, the way I look at it the timing is irrelevant. I gave a good friend a mixed CD the other day - cheap and thoughtful I figure. I guess to me it's kind of like I'll do what I naturally do, if it happens to be a part of this thing the rest of the world calls Christmas, hey we have something in common. I have no objection to doing a formal Christmas celebration with friends either, it's what they're into so that deserves some of my time and energy since they are my friends.

    Wow, Introspection!

I like your attitude! God bless me to always have friends and neighbors who think as you do!
