Well darn, looks like I was the one misinformed about the alcohol.

: WHAT WOULD U HAVE DONE ON THE TITANIC?
I would have asked myself, "Why in the hell did you leave your wetsuit at home?"

Mary, maybe it's beer that I was told about. If alcohol works as antifreeze, I would have survived because I would have been drinking in order to not be scared shitless. You know, courage in a bottle.

I went on a cruise for my honeymoon, and we were pretty much half tanked most of the time, so I woulda been plenty ready for that iceberg. I also have a story about a friend who was extremly sloshed one time and ran his car into a lightpole, when he saw the flashing lights in the distance he panicked and took off. He was headed to his friends house, but it was on the other side of the Arkansas River. He swam it in the middle of winter, drunk, and made it safely to the other side. Now meadow does not endorse either drinking and driving, or swimming while drunk, but you have to admit, people can do some strange things with a little alcohol in them sometimes.

Mary, where did you dream up this stuff?! No one has ANY proof whatsoever that the baker was actually in the water for 2 1/2 hours and that drinking hard liquor helped in his survival. And to rely on a movie for your conclusions is just silly! We have no idea how big the man was and his being a baker COULD be a clue that he was big man with more body fat and that is probably the most important thing when it comes to cold water survival.Liquor will do NOTHING to help you survive. When you hit cold water your body will almost instantly start to save its vital internal organs by reducing blood flow to the "less valuable" parts so that vital organs can go on functioning (at least for awhile).Because the liver is one of the organs that helps us rid ourselves of excess alcohol, when it is working overtime it is using valuable energy to do so.Not only that, but being drunk would probably have dulled their senses and bad decisions may have been made.Alcohol does not work like "antifreeze" and if your blood temperature is that low and it starts to freeze, your core body temperature is already too low....you are on your way out .Its called hypothermia. With all due respect this little ''theory'' has made the rounds for years, and at first glance it sounds plausible but in the real world it does not hold up.

Damn. I wish I had gone on the Net earlier. I would've got this one. After the movie I became a real Titanic fanatic and read all I could on the subject. I don't know if everyone would have survived, but it would have been quite a bit more than what really happened. But part of the tragedy was the waste of life. The fact that 300-400 more people could have survived on the existing lifeboats changed maritime laws that reach up to our day.
There is the theory, and one I agree with, that says Titanic would have been better off just plowing into the iceberg. It is thought that the damage would have been limited to only the first two compartments and while the ship would have been unseaworthy it would not have sunk. It could have been towed into New York and no one would have died.
Last known photograph of Titanic as it left Ireland bound for New York:

There was a major design fault with the rudder....it was too small for the size of the ship....and yes had they steered staright into the iceberg....the ship would not have sank.
