WTS bans American football for "true"...

In a magazine article, the WTS has warned the R&F Dubs that going to the football this New Year is "pagan" and is engaging in a "false religious festival".

To support this teaching, the WTS quotes from the Encyclopedia Britannica:

"Football games in the U.S. have all the external trappings of religious festivals . . . one side representing evil and the other good, depending upon the viewpoint of the members of the audience. Leading the congregation are the priestesses (cheerleaders) . . . Operating on the principle of sympathetic magic, the priestesses attempt to transfer the enthusiasm of the crowd to the appropriate combatants."

Then the WTS heirarchy make a small admission:

Of course, the ancient Babylonians did not have a football game on New Years Day. But for their celebration, all the gods of the towns surrounding Babylon were brought into the city and joined in an impressive parade, to help Marduk win his battle with Tiamat. The great battle itself was relived through a public reading of the Enuma elish, the creation epic that told the story.

Still, the connection is made and the R&F are left in no doubt as to a "true" christians position. But to protect themselves from looking too stupid, they state:

Whether it descended from an ancient ritual or not, it has taken on a religious significance for some fans.

So there you have it, if you go to the football, I guess you're on your way to being DA!!

In case you want to read this drivel, it's in the Awake! magazine of December 22, 1980, page 22.

    Cheers, Ozzie

Yep it also has unpleasant sexual connotations.

Ever been wide open in the end zone? Or sacked 6 times in a week?

It's no worse than being tackled in the Red Zone, or fumbling at the line of scrimmage.......

So I guess they can't play "touch football" at their congregation picnics anymore.... LMAO at this lame-ass excuse of an article.

Why don't they just admit they're JEALOUS of the time and attention American football gets on Sunday from the JW men, who they'd rather have going out knocking on doors of other people who are watching the football game.

Makes you wonder how they can condone using football stadia as places of worship?

Garrett Losch (sp?) gave a Morning Worship discussion one morning on American Football and how violent it is. However he didn't reference this article - you'd think a GB member would read all of his magazines from cover to cover like a good little witness - or at least research such info before giving a morning worship lecture about it. Instead he just talked about the violence displayed and "being caught up in the spirit of the world" blah-blah-blah. His message was basically a "true" christian would not watch or participate in American football because of the violent nature of the sport. This further contributed to my existing doubts - I mean.....here they are trying to control EVERYTHING we do! I couldn't believe it - now Bethelites had this moral obligation to uphold these righteous words of the GB, but most of us (at least the guys I knew) pretty much disregarded the whole thing. This was one of the things that led to me leaving Bethel though - I felt that I should never disregard the words of a GB member - it was quite evident he was rambling off at the mouth about his personal feelings. I'm sure there's probably been article's about violent sports, and it's possible football was mentioned (I don't have WT CD-ROM) but the articles never said not to watch or play football, just to be on gaurd of the spirit it invokes. Whateveeerrrrrrrr.....I just got tired of all the control mechanisms - to me life isn't supposed to be like that, and I don't appreciate people trying to control every facet of my life and mental process.

    Good riddance.

In my old congregation (White Rock) they used to plan the Sunday meeting times around when the Dallas Cowboys games would be. Football is a big deal in America; it's almost a religon in Texas. If anything would cause a schism, this might be it.

Interesting information Ozzie. Thanks for posting it. Man, the Borg rulers are stopping at nothing to shackle their subjects. I have exactly 2 hours and 40 minutes till Tn Titans football!!! Next thing they'll go after is Rugby and Soccer. Tennis seems safe as long as the Williams sisters rule.
