LOL at Gopher!!!

Ever since I started coming here I have learned how The GB seems to be all about controling people and then blaming The R&F if they believed what they said "A Good Christian" should do!
I am Mexican and nice pinatas were baned because they"MIGHT" have pagan origens......not because they do!
Now, The GB has always had it out for football, rugby, and hockey but, this is crazy!
There is a thread here some where about Hawaiian Luaus and how The GB makes them sound ok!
Which I find odd because they are so rooted in pagan practice it stinks! It is not even that long ago Hawaiians were doing false worship to their pagan gods and yet here i the quote,"Although the luau may originally have had some connection with false practices, the word has simply come to refer to a Hawaiian banquet. Many christians may therefore conscientiously feel that they can participate"
What a crock!! I mean I will go to a luau because it is obvious pagan doesn't matter to Jehovah or Jesus anymore! They are not holding us to old testament (Hebrew Scriptures)standards! It is too hard these days to seperate pagan and non pagan traditions. There are just too many and you'd go NUTS!
Which is just what they wish us to do! Keep looking this way and that until we can't stand alone anymore and are crawling and saying,"Please GB,please, tell me what I will do next!"
Football is just a fun sport same as anyother! My son for one will play if he so chooses!
So There!
My 2 cents

The fact that the article quoted is from 1980 shows that, at least in some areas, the borg is losing the battle to control people. They wouldn't put out an article like this today.
The Ohio State University (located in Columbus, where I live) football team is playing in the national championship game this year, and you'd better believe that the J-dubs in my area are as excited about it as anybody.
Back in 1998, OSU also had a team that was doing well and was projected to be a championship team (but they lost a game and that was the end of those hopes). We had a CO make comments at an assembly about how there was "nothing wrong" about the brothers being excited about it (as most of us were).
I have mixed feelings about American football. It is a brutal sport, and is becoming increasingly more so. And the inflated salaries of professional athletes has gotten out of hand.
About 5 or 6 years ago Sports Illustrated had an article about steroid use and other such cheating among athletes. The article made the comment that in the sports world, it is well known that to succeed, an athlete must have 1) natural ability, 2) a good agent, and 3) a good chemist.
I think that most, if not all professional (and college) football players are on steroids or other such performance enhancing chemicals. Can't blame them, the stakes are so frigging high and the payoff for success is so spectacular. America is suffering from too much capitalism, and I think the world of sports bears that out as much as anything.
AGREED, Dan...
here we are in a frikkin recession - got thousands of brilliant, hard-working people without jobs, and you got these guys that exercise and play for a living making, not thousands but MILLIONS of dollars a year. Do they get salary cuts and times like this? Have ticket prices gone down at sporting events? I don't think so.
Where are the values? Unfortunately the people that really make a difference in the world are not properly rewarded for it, IMO.
thanxs ozzie; i know that the wt has said before that sports are a form of competion and that was un-christian... well i will need another memory chip inplanted in my brain, because my brain just can't keep up with all this proper spritual food at the proper time... but i know it's all in the back of my mind, and A jw will never know what wt gem i will use to make him put his footBALL into HIS MOUTH !!!! JOHN
I showed this to my husband....HS and college football player and captain of teams in both.
He laughed. He said anyone who would say something like that is obviously a sissy.
My opinion is that a dub would be knocked over in a NY minute by a little league football player (these are grade school children learning the fundamentals).
The dubs are trying to control every aspect of the R & Fs life. They are idiots.
It is a sport!!! The players are going to be pumped up, jacked up etc. So what? My husband is a BIG guy. He never took anything-he dislikes taking ibprophen for pain. He never made it to the pros because he realized he was not the biggest, strongest, fastest, etc. He got a lot out of it though. He learned team work, leadership, cooperation and many other skills that help people in the workforce. How many dubs have those skills? Not too many. Plus he got an education...
Football (American Style) is a game for real men. It does seperate the men from the boys. I played on a flag-football team with my husband 3 years ago. When you hit the ground after running hard, IT HURTS!! Ouch. However, I got right back up and kept playing. I am not a sissy.
I admire any athelete. The devotion and dedication it takes to be competitive is impressive. If they get paid well for being muscular, fast, etc. I am all for it. They earned it.
Now I have to figure out how to become a sports reporter so I can do post-game interviews in the locker room....
There is a thread here some where about Hawaiian Luaus and how The GB makes them sound ok!
Luaus are pagan but OK, even though attractive young women dancing slowly and swaying their hips from side to side should put immoral thoughts in a dub male's head (well ok, some female dubs too). Reminds me of when I learned chess was bad because it was a war game but Monopoly (promoting greed, screwing the other people financially) is OK.
Pretzel logic.
Kingpawn,
I learned chess was bad because it was a war game but Monopoly (promoting greed, screwing the other people financially) is OK.About chess -- they "tacked" on that one. After condemning chess in one article, the next article which covered the topic (a general article about pastimes) said that many people enjoy a relaxing game of chess! No condemnation there. I guess the guy who wrote the 2nd article liked chess better than the writer who penned the original article.
Regarding MONOPOLY (a.k.a. Monotony), the WT Society would WANT its rank-and-file to play this game, to draw attention to the fact that BIG BUSINESS is evil and greedy. That would draw attention away from the fact that they, through their shrewd practices (c'mon everyone--send us your inheritance!) actually "promote greed and screw other people financially".
Many christians may therefore conscientiously feel that they can participate
Um, this must have been a typo; the GB doesn't allow JWs to make up their own minds about ANYTHING.
Not only is Monopoly "promoting greed" and "screwing the other people financially," but how long does it take to play one game with 4-6 people? The last time I played, it must have been over six hours long! Talk about taking away from our time to study the Watchtower. Or god forbid, staying up too late and not being able to make it out in service or to the meeting the next morning because you are too stinkin tired from playing all night!
