I just wanted to hug you ladies. I know it's not easy being a Mom of an autistic child. I'm not one, but I have a niece that has Autism and I'm in awe of my sister-in-laws patience, and determination, to help her daughter.

    Great thread here!

Thought I'd share a little experience with you, one of the ladies with autism earned the title of being a "smearer" for about 12 years. One day not so long ago it was noticed that she wasnt purposely smearing, infact she was trying to clean up the mess but just didnt have the coherancy to do it, she knew what she had to do with the one hand but couldnt follow through with the other...she just couldnt figure out how to make a clean sweep so it would end up all over the place. I thought that was so moving, she just wanted to clean up and simply needed someone to show her how to do it, there has been no problem since. Nice little story huh? Unfortunately its not the same for every adult with autism, some just like the feel sensation. Because I work with adults and not children I sometimes find that asking the adult with autism to clean up the urine with a mop and bucket gets them to realise that THEY have to do the work to clean up, so they dont do it so often. Thankfully most of the adults dont make any mess at all, they have grown out of that stage and because of the autism they are spotless and dont like to see anything out of place.

Every one of them is different and unique and different tactics have to be used for each.

All the best to you Petty, Shera, U_R, glad to see you can relate to eachother and encourage each other here.

Hi - I've been trying to email you from home, but everytime I reply to your email - the address doesn't seem to be quite right! I'm at work right now, but will try again tonight when I get home.

Have you tried the "positive reinforcement" technique yet? Are you having any success? I know how difficult the "smearing" thing can be - all the clean-up, nausea etc. etc. involved (and the amount of toys & books that are disposed of on a regular basis). I hope things are working out better.

Did you see this article in Parents magazine?

Sounds alot like me - but we are having some success so I'm fortunately doing a little better - I don't know what I'll do when my Nick gets that big!
