When the elders or other "mature ones" tried to assist you, they would ask questions like, "What's wrong? Is everything OK? Why weren't you at the meeting? Or service?.......What good excuses did you give, when asked these types of questions?
What Excuses Did You Make For Being A Lousy JW?

Most of my excuses were physical, like the flu, fibromyalgia or a slow-to-heal broken ankle. I also told them that it was because of depression. They didn't say too much about the physical problems, but would say that my depression would be eleviated if I prayed more and put Jehovah first.
Minimus, where do you get all these thought-provoking subjects???

If I missed a lot meetings I would tell that my wordly parents were starting to give me a hard time about being "balanced"

Yup, me too with the physical excuses. It was the only way to have some time to myself. Normally I was either in service, working, at a meeting, preparing for a meeting, or sharing my room with a regular pioneer my family took in. The only acceptable reason for not performing up to pioneer "standards" was to be ill. Sad.

I was rarely asked. as a kid: My parents didn't go. later after marriage: The kids are sick or I'm sick

As an elder, I found that anytime a person said that they were either physically sick or had problems with depression, they were pretty much left unbothered. Most elders didn't know how to handle it .If a person's name was brought up by another elder at a meeting, Brother Caring would always pipe up and say, "We really should just encourage Sister Ill, not get on her case. She's got a lot of problems, as the Presiding Overseer can attest to". Then, everybody backed off!

Having an unbelieving mate is always a good one, too. You can pretty much do anything forbidden, as long as you can put the blame on someone else. If you are caught doing Christmas decorations, it's because my husband is making me. If you vote, ....my husband made me go. If you win a million dollar lottery, it was his ticket. If you go to a work Christmas party, it's the unbeliever's fault. If you have forbidden sex, the "worldly" mate, demanded it.....Ahhhh, life is good!
