Bee Gee fans gather at hospital

Fans of the Bee Gees gathered outside the hospital where singer Maurice Gibb is being treated after suffering a heart attack.

The 53-year-old musician remained in a critical but stable condition following emergency surgery.

Bee Gees lovers joined together at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre in Miami where the star has remained since the operation on Thursday night.

One woman carried a large "get well soon Maurice" banner.

Gibb's wife, Yvonne, and his two children are thought to be at his side.

He has opened his eyes for a brief time and squeezed his daughter's hand as she sat at his bedside.

The bassist is understood to have started complaining of stomach pains on Thursday morning.

Doctors operated on him to remove an intestinal blockage after he collapsed at home, but he suffered a cardiac arrest during the operation.

His twin brother, Robin, said he had responded well to the surgery.

"The latest update is that all his vital organs are A1 and he's recovering," he said.

"Obviously, it's been very bad but every hour is a bonus."

As a member of the Bee Gees, Maurice Gibb has been one of the best-known faces in British showbusiness for the last four decades.

He, Robin and another brother, Barry, started their singing careers in the 1950s, earning their name from a previous incarnation as the Brothers Gibb.

Following a spell in Australia, where they gained their first recording contract, they returned to the UK in 1967 to critical acclaim.

Their distinctive, close-harmony singing has been their trademark throughout the years and survived musical fashion and family rifts.

Their hits included the soundtrack to the film of the disco phenomenon, Saturday Night Fever, in 1977, and Stayin' Alive, in 1983.

Saturday Night Fever saw some of the group's most successful tracks such as Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love and Night Fever. One of their most successful collaborations was with Motown legend Diana Ross and Chain Reaction in January 1986.

In 1987, after several years of writing and producing acts as diverse as Barbra Streisand to Dolly Parton, they were again at the top of the charts with You Win Again.

Their last album together was in 2001, entitled This Is Where I Came In. They were each awarded CBEs in the 2002 New Year Honours List.

Maurice, the bass guitarist and keyboard player in the group who has had well-documented problems with alcohol in the past, met his first wife, the singer Lulu, in the BBC canteen.

They married in 1969 but later divorced.

Speaking from Los Angeles, she said: "Obviously, I'm deeply shocked and upset. We are still waiting for the latest news from the hospital."

Wow. That's a shock especially since they had just announced that he was going to be fine. I guess I'd better call my sister. She is going to be very upset. I think she has every song the BeeGees ever recorded.

While not a Disco fan much myself, I always enjoyed their unique music. Sad news indeed.

That's very sad news for his family and friends.

I was never a Bee Gee's fan personally, but still, sad news indeed.

So sorry, especially for his wife and children.

The Bee Gees were not a group that often provoked public accolades, but many people secretly liked their music. Their stuff was tuneful, and was quite irrestistible (to many people).

Ahhh.... HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART? Many of us are feeling a bit heartbroken at this news.
