It is difficult to compare UK / US humour. The culture gap is so wide. I must admit, some of the shows that have been mentioned as shining examples of brilliant UK humour by the US and Canadian posters (eg. Keeping Up Appearances), I would class as tedious in the extreme. I would take Frasier, South Park and even Friends over On the Buses, Carry On or Keeping Up Appearances any day.

    Examples of excellent British comedy?

Has Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer's shows (Shooting Stars, Reeeves and Mortimer) made it over the pond yet? That makes me laugh, it draws strongly on Morecambe and Wise legacy. Ronnie Barker is a genius, The Two Ronnies still makes me laugh. There is an animated satirical series called 2DTV which is very funny. And The Royle Family is outstanding, great acting and writing.

Of course, if you think that Hyacinth Bucket is the pinnacle of comic genius, you willl probably disagree with my choices!

Edited to add "The Royle Family"

For those who posed the question about Australian comedy, here's an interesting little essay on why Australia is piss-weak in the area of sit-coms. Britain has its class system to struggle with and the US has the American Dream, both great sitcom fodder. But Australia? Read on:

I used to love the Paul Hogan Show back in the 70's/80's. I wish they would repeat it!

I'm gonna have to say the US wins hands down on this one. Although I do love monty python ,red dwarf ,black adder and various other british comedy and it is true the canadians are complete lunatics ( where am I going with this? ) ohh right ! I mean we've had shows like married with children ,seinfeld , cheers , night court ,friends The Ozzbourns kill but not sure if that's american . let's not forget Bill cosby ,Dave letterman , johnny carson , jay lenno who I think is one of the funniest guys in the world , Connan O'brien the simpsons Oh god I could sit here all day with all the variety we have going on here.

Hogan's sketch show was great. But he's lost any credibility he once had by a string of poorly crafted movies that try to prove that Outback Ockers are culturally and morally superior to suburban Yanks - not a great formula for success in the American market!

I think they all win, I like red dwarf, monty python, drew carry, who's line, south park, the simpson, etc. Depends on on my mood. I've actually got to meet Craig Charles, from Red Dwarf, so that's my favorite show. Can't wait for the Red Dwarf movie.
