I am not entirely decided on the issue of capital punishment. Every once in a while I get bloodthirst, vengeful, you know? I am vey glad this poor woman was not executed, more food for thought for me! Thanks, Englishman. I always enjoy your posts.

I'm still in favour of the death penalty, but only for those where it is proven beyond ANY doubt that they're guilty. People like Charles Manson, Charles Ing, those two little bastards over in England several years ago to kidnapped a 2-year old from the mall, beat him and set him on the train tracks to be run over, Paul Bernardo and Karla Holmoka, O.J. Simpson.......these people ALL deserve to die for the crimes they committed. Yes, there are lots of innocent people who have been executed and that is awful, but there should still be the death penalty for those who are guilty, and where it's been proven beyond any doubt that they're guilty.

    Mary,

According to the law, this lady was guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. If we still had hanging in force, she would have finished up like the last woman to be hanged in Britain, Ruth Ellis, who's neck was 2 inches longer after she had fallen through the trap door.

Now, they say that even Ruth Ellis would only have been found guilty of manslaughter, not murder.http://www.crimelibrary.com/classics2/ellis/

Kill em all and let God sort em out!

Except if there IS no afterlife, by killing them now, you deprive them of their only life.

Honestly, I think if we didn't have religion, the crime rate in the world would be MUCH lower. Granted, serial killers and such would probably still exist as it's a 'sickness of the mind', as it were. But how many fewer homicides would their be if the attacker had been taught from youth that instead of going to 'somewhere nicer' when someone dies, that's it - it's over.

Yes, I'm sure that wouldn't stop ALL killers, but I think a surprisingly large number at least have that in the back of their minds. "I may be killing him for his car, but he's not REALLY dead. He's probably in a happier place, anyway". Sure, it's a justification, and it probably didn't influence his decision much. But, what if everyone from youth had been instead taught that life is a fragile thing, and once gone, it's gone.

I can't help but think that without religion, there would be at least SOME improvement here.

This is still a highly suspicious case. Just because the Court Of Appeal have said what they have said , I would say its a testimony to how the case was handled as to the gulit of the person concerned.

Don't it too giddy about this one.

I completely agree with you Englishman.

Mary, were you part of that viscious mob that attacked the vans carrying the children who killed Jamie Bulger? These boys, although guilty of a terrible act, were children and I'm glad they've been rehabilitated. Maybe they've moved in next door to you. You should read As If by Blake Morrison for a bit more insight into that case in particular.

I too am delighted to read of this lady's release. When I first heard the story, I considered the Guilty verdict dubious to say the least. It just did not seeem right , and I was impressed that her husband had such faith in her , and even the Law Society refused to strike her off an unprecedented decision in such circumstances.

I am not convinced that there is no place for capital punishment. If the evidence is clearly overwhelming, and for self confessed terrorists , eg Richard Reid, but the burden of proof would have to be much stronger than just a normal conviction .

Good luck to Sally Clarke !

I am also glad that stoning has been abolished. If it hadn't, I'm sure several in my old congregation would have chucked some good sized rocks at me.
