I am a catholic woman who is marrying a JW.....I have posted on this subject alone extensively on the adults and disagreements board so that is not really what I want to discuss here..question is about blood.

My daughter from a previous marriage is type A+ and her father lives 2 states away....now my fiance the JW has the same type blood as her as I do not..I am O+ .....so can a JW donate blood in case of emergency?

Can a JW give blood for testing.....in case of illness or whatever?

I'm not up on the "latest greatess" light from the borg on this subject. For as long as I was associated a JW could not give blood nor take blood. Strick borg law.

JW's could get blood tests done, to establish whether or not they were ill or get statistical data for health reasons, that's it.

I believe there has been some new information, I just can't say. Maybe someone will read this and give us an answer.

By the way, How can an active JW marry a Catholic outsider????? ...without being outsted????

    Hi Jaina!

Along with Sentinel: As far as I know, a JW is still absolutely forbidden from either accepting or donating whole blood; period. The only slightly (and I emphasize slightly) possible exception is for autologous blood. I've seen a fair amount of speculation about this issue, and many others here are more tuned in to possible WTS changes, but I'd say:

Any clear and official exception to this "law" would raise such a ruckus that even the rocks would hear it.

    • A JW cannot donate blood in case of emergency.
    • A JW cannot donate blood ever.
    • A JW can have blood tests.
    • If a JW cuts his finger and sucks on it, that is OK.
    • A JW with kidney failure can use a dialysis machine.
    • A JW cannot accept a blood transfusion ever, but may use blood fractions or blood substitutes, or components made from cow's blood.
    • A hemopheliac JW may take blood components to keep himself alive.
    • A JW may work with his doctor to plan for a scheduled "bloodless" surgery. For instance, he can take drugs to boost his blood platelets. There are new blood recycler and filter machines that can recycle leaked blood during the operation.
    • A JW may not store his own blood before a scheduled surgery.
    • Older members of the congregation or older elders might get confused, and think a JW has accepted blood but he hasn't according to "current light" on the subject.
    • A JW that accepts a blood transfusion automatically disassociates himself/herself from the WTS.
    • A JW can probably get away with eating eat a bloody steak.

and btw I am trying to get him out of the borg hehe

(I am such a trekkie....I love all this borg talk hehe)

    hi Jaina,

I'd love to say more ,but it has nothing to do with your serious question. Only about your relationship with a JW.

So, please go here and read and pay attention to what AlanF said. This serious subject seems to be somewhat of a secret unless you call the right people in the JW organization. So keep in mind what he said and find and keep the right phone numbers of the people who can give you the life saving advice your might someday need. Keep it by your phone as you would the police and fire department. And give you JW mate the number once you dig and find it. Seems like this subject is not priority enough for the organizational higher-ups to make this information repetative study articles such as they do with the subject of pioneering for the Watchtower INC printing business.

Thanks for posting the link, Somebody.

    To repeat:

The Society is keeping their answer from the JW community, except for those who make specific inquiry: Yes, it is allowed for a JW to donate blood if they are convinced that the blood will only be used to make allowed fractions. Disallowed are: whole blood, red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma. Allowed fractions are anything derived from these.

I seem to remember also that blood salvaging during surgury must be done under vacuum rather than simpler gravity collection so that the JW could rationalize that the blood merely entered an artificial extention of his circulatory system.
