How nice to be young, thin ,healthy, and have all the answers.
I have been both thin, and overweight. It is very difficult be overweight, i can only imagine how someone who is vervy obese must feel. I really think past a certain weight, it is not an eating disorder, but a definite metabolic dosorder.
And no i would not relish sititng next to somone that large in a very crowded space.
however obese people do not smell worse than anyone who has not use an deordorant.
It's funny the majority of the stinky people I've ran into, weren't fat at all. How many obese transients have you met?
Personally, I hate people invading 'my space', especially when your are somewhere like on a plane where you have to be for 8 hours.
I think it's reasonable that if people take up 2 seats that they should pay for 2 seats. If they take up 2, pay for 1 and then overlap some poor soul who has the misfortune to seit next to them then that person is being victimised for no fault of their own. A british woman was squashed on a long flight and suffered serious medical problems for it (DVT) - she just won some compensations for it. The airlines owe us what we pay for - a comfortable journey in a set that we have paid for, occupied by us only.
There is no reason to be insulting to people though.
I happen to think that the fairest system would be to have a weight limit that is inclusive of person and luggage.
Why should an overweight person get for free (extra space) what I have to pay for?
Having been wedged inbetween two people who overlaped into my seat before, I do have to agree that if you take up 2 seats you should have to buy to seats. That said I would like to state that I believe the airlines should have to make those things bigger....I am not overweight (ok will maybe a tad bit) and I am a pretty tight fit in those seats...and don't even get me started on leg room....when the person in front of you pushes their seat back and ends up laying in your lap...it is TO CLOSE!
I, also, agree with Simon that they should have weight and/or size limits for the seats and if you go over these you should be told IN ADVANCE when you buy your ticket that you will need to buy two. I can imagine how horrible it would be to have someone confront you over this in front of a crowd of people.
For the record there are a multitude of reasons people are overweight...and just because someone is overweight does not mean they are lazy or dirty. Most overweight people do not like being that way and are extremely depressed over it..which in turn leads them to eat...it's a cycle that is hard to break...believe me I know!

When I first read this thread and especially the first few posts, I immediately felt I was at a Kingdom Hall where I remember growing up with insensitive remarks about overweight people.
Yes, "God's people" talk about "fat" Witnesses like they were an "it". My sister had a weight problem all the years she was abused and you guessed it, the Witness kids and the worldly kids tortured her for her appearance while she was being tortured at home.
Guess that does make me prejudiced FOR the overweight class. No way should they have to pay for 2 seats on a plane.
Should very thin people pay less for a ticket? They may not be taking up their whole seat
I really think past a certain weight, it is not an eating disorder, but a definite metabolic dosorder.
Here's a 100% guaranteed way to lose weight, no matter how obese you are or what medical condition you have: Burn more calories than you consume.
Why should an overweight person get for free (extra space) what I have to pay for?
True. Maybe there should be non-business class seats that are made for overweight people, but are called Comfort Zone seating, or whatever, so that they can buy a seat for their girth, be comfortable, and still get a cheaper price than two seats.....who knows, that might work.
Again, I did not mention the smell in accordance with fat people. I was making a joke about people who have stinky BO. Some people had the opinion that all fat people smell. Being fat myself, (but not obese), I do not smell, I can assure you.*sniff*
Oh, and for everyone that is offended, like I said, just mentioning this to people makes them yell discrimination. People are just ready to jump down your thraot if you don't find every situation with overweight people acceptable. Simple as this, you take up the space, (IE-spilling over the rim of the chair) you pay for a second seat.
Since this is so controvertial, I think that the airlines need to do something.....the Comfort Seating idea is probably the least offensive, and the most cost effective.

As a thin person, can I get one of these comfort seats, or am I going to be discriminated against?
