This was the advice given me on Sunday by my JW dad. I was telling him about a chance I have take a paperless stock option.

He encouraged me to put money in a safer investment, so "I would have enough to retire on." I told him I started saving around 95, after the Generation Change Watchtower. LOL. I said, "Doesn't it seem kinda odd you're telling me to save for RETIREMENT?!?!?!"

    I almost barfed.

What happened to Armegeddon? Did I miss it?

    Hello LDH

There was a Watchtower article in 2000 that encouraged all JWs to start saving for a pension or at least have a retirement plan. It got right on my nerves...many must have cringed at that article. Its another example of their double think i.e, armageddon is definately just around the corner but save for a pension just incase. I also think the article was a product of the change in the 1914 generation doctrine and all the complaints the WT had from those who were of the generation who were told they would see the end so didnt bother saving.

This comment by your father, would NEVER have been THOUGHT of a few years ago. It just goes to show that in reality, they REALLY don't believe the end is around the corner. My mother now says that it will probably happen after she dies. These poor suckers!

When I started working and had accumulated some savings - circa 1983, I mentioned to my dad that I was considering starting an RRSP (Registered Retirement Savings Plan for you non-Canadians, kind of like a 401K in the US) or putting a downpayment on a house. His response?? Why would I want to do that?? Armageddon is right around the corner! Save your money and then take a year off work to pioneer.... He is retired now, and needless to say, experiencing a less comfortable life than he would have if he had the foresight to invest and save for his retirement.

    Love, Scully

Ironically, my parents are in the minority of JWs who are financially secure and well prepared for the future.

I wonder, were they hedging their bets?

It’s funny how the borg “Armageddon any time now” programming is so embedded. In 1987 I moved from my home state, started a new job, and stopped going to meetings. At one level I had made the break and abandoned the tower and it’s teachings, or so I thought.

In that year I was offered a chance to join the company 401k plan. I declined, and for a number of years thereafter did not save a dime for retirement. Now I find myself playing catch-up and it’s all because the deeply entrenched jw programming caused me to “reason” it would be foolish to save for the future. Now how foolish is that!

Being part of a cult is a dangerous thing. It’s a danger to your health, to your happiness, and to your future. Please learn from my example.

You can't believe how angry that makes me. I went for years without investing in a 401K that was offered, because "the end is so near." Around 1980 I finally started investing and it has been a financial savior, giving us the means to live above the poverty level. If you know which watchtower the poster is referring to, please let me know. Bug

Oh but you know what any loyal dub would say:

"You made those decisions yourself. They were YOUR decisions. You can't blame the FDS for keeping the New System fresh in our minds!"
