If there were only one God, why do we encounter the expression, "Most High God"?
Is this not indicative of polytheism, and of levels (or degrees) of god-ness?

@Punky, have you noted the baseless and illogical statements used in your Creation book quote, it is the style of reasoning on which this religion is built:
"The face of the deep, of course, would be toward the Pleiades, which are claimed to be the habitation of Jehovah." (Creation; 1927; 2,175,000 ed.; p. 94)
1 the face of the deep faces all the stars visible from the Earth!
2 there is no evidence for an almighty god living anywhere let alone in the Pleiades.
So surely Doug the mention of grades of gods reflects the early Bronze Age view and accounts for the struggle the Hebrew text is famous for in trying to convince the rabble the "new light" (probably from Egypt) that now there is only One Most high god.

When I much younger, during the 60's, I smoked dope with most of my jw friends, i was "the most high" because i smoked more dope that them. End of discussion!

The first references to God in the Bible are polytheistic. The word for God is elohim, the plural form of God. Thus, the plural references in Genesis. "Man has become as one of us," and it even suggests there's a female element to God in that the Gods created man in their image, "male and female."
But how is God one? How can he say he knows of no other? (See Isaiah 44)
When Jesus prayed to the Father concerning the Twelve, he said, ...that THEY may be ONE, even as WE are ONE." This is how the Gods are one. They're one in purpose. But how many GODS are there? We know there's the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, but is that it? Is there a MOTHER in Heaven? And are their others?
We have the singular word FAMILY, but there may be five or more members. Astrophysicists tell us that our universe contains 100-200 billion galaxies. And there may be that many (or more) universes. To say that God is one of a kind and that he has no peers doesn't sound reasonable. And to say God created Earth in seven days also shows that the creation process had to take time. Seven "days" (or eras) is stated, and if there's a single God that can do anything, why didn't He utter a word and create it with the merest thought? The answer is, He can't. Although he's God, He builds using matter, and it takes him time. Otherwise, it wouldn't have taken time to create the Earth.

In the Bible, one can take things literally and figuratively. I take most of the things figuratively, and I benefit because of that.
The expression Most High is rich in meaning. It suggests that we are all His children, spirits in human costumes, whereas He is the Supreme Spirit, hence Most High.
Similarly, when I read the account of Adam and Eve, I apply the same logic. Behind the details, there is some interesting lesson. See the automatic response in Adam and Eve after they sinned: They immediately felt ashamed and hid themselves which defines sin as something that makes one feel no longer worthy of God’s love, care and protection (not that they felt they were naked physically).

El the phonician god and Anu the same god in Assyria was a sky god. Later the Phoenicians and Assyrians worshipped one of his sons Baal Hadad or Enlil this god too was a sky god weather deity but not as high in the sky as El. This new god was also associated with mountains. Zaphon was the house of Hadad became MT Olympis for the Greeks and their mountains weather god with a different name Zeus. This mount Zaphon was also the Home of the thunder and lightning god of the Hittites.
This Mt Zaphon was to far away for the Israelites and Jews so they changed the place of his home to Mt tabor or Mt Zion. El shaddai means god of the mountain. The root word Shadd can be traced back to mean breasts , mountains truly are breasts of the world. The the original Israelite sky or heaven god El had 70 sons so does Gideon and a few other characters in the Bible.
Today man worships Baal Hadad or a better name would be Zeus or maybe his counterpart in Rome Jove. Wasn’t it a Roman Catholic monk that chose the name Jehovah? Jove also known as Jupiter becomes Jehovah, not to far of a stretch if I say so myself.
Someone said “there’s nothing new under the sun” so true and yes he mentioned sun , next time you see the sun stop and look at it for a second. Admire it in all its glory because in all reality that’s what we have all been worshipping all this time!

Most High is a phrase people applied to God, hence we can't blame God. Again people depicted God as looking for worship, as though He is in some need. This reminds me of Plato who wrote: "The god of love lives in a state of need. It is a need, it is an urge, it is a homeostatic imbalance. Like hunger and thirst, it's almost impossible to stamp out."
But God must be much better than humans!
