Russian authorities have already begun breaking up Jehovah’s Witnesses services and collecting members’ identities following a Supreme Court decision to uphold a ban on the religious organization a spokesman for the faith said Tuesday.

If the ban was immediately why didn't the JWS stop meetings and wait for the appeal ?

To show disrespect for the law isn't doing them any positive good at this stage

Putin's Russia is clearly over-authoritarian.

The WTS uses individual members as pawns in their game.

There is no reason they couldn't and shouldn't suspend meetings, antagonizing the authorities is pure PR. They want some blood for PR purposes.

That's the trouble with governmental bans.

The people who suffer are just the poor low-level schlubs who really believe the crap is true, and just want to be left alone.

The guys who should really suffer are tucked safely away in a lakeside resort in upstate New York.

So why not gather as families only using the bible, the Russian Orthodox version? Did the early Christians need a building or an organizational publication? The Russian Orthodox Church has been trying to rid itself of other religious groups in Russia as well some Muslims in other parts of the old Soviet Union. According to the WTS Christians did fine until they received recognition by secular governments (Constantine) and then it went downhill from there per the WTS.

I just hope this doesn't end up in torture, death, and individuals losing their belongings.
