We have a similar dog who is very excitable , loves children and all the family, yet the Postman rings almost ever day and dog goes berserk, behaviour specialist ( dogs that is, not mine ) says he trying the defend us and inbred is such behaviour. Taking him out is a nightmare as the merest whiff of another dog and he becomes uncontrollable, could easily pull you under traffic. We go out in the dark! Tried muzzles, choke chains etc, nothing works. Odd thing is he goes for a haircut once a month and in between haircuts he goes for a bath, at dog parlour, he loves BIG dogs there but not small ones, staff love him though, but that may be tip my wife leaves! When he joined us, he a rescue dog, very strict rules over what he could sit on and where, now all rules gone and he follows my wife everywhere, has his own sheepskin rug in our bedroom, can't beat it for company, would like to set him on some elders I know.

If it's a Scottish terrier, it's pronounced 'dug'

I imagine most, if not all, of the clientele in the salon are women, and you said the dog barks at men who walk by? Sometimes a dog, male or female, will only bark at men. I've seen this before. It usually means they were abused exclusively by men.

>>> A cat story.
A cat, we had never seen before, showed up on our back porch with a festering paw. Mom and I brought him inside, poured peroxide on his infected mess, it bubbled up, he was calm and appreciative. So, in a short time, this big lug of a cat, with 6 toes on each paw, became our new beloved pet. Except, he was afraid of men. Monster was what we named him and he answered to and he slept on my bed and like a normal cat, loved his cuddles... But only women. When my dad or brother came inside, Monster would run and hide, usually under furniture and would not come out until the coast was clear.
>>>Dogs... My guess was a male human hurt this dog and he didn't/won't forget.

Aww, Lois, that's the sweetest story.
I'm a cat lady myself. I have a 20 lb. orange tabby who is a snuggler, but even flapping pajama legs earn an attack. He is always on the hunt.
As to dogs, I've known dogs who only bark at men in baseball caps. I agree that it's likely a bad experience that they've generalized to all people who look similar.
