Well, crap! I"m having a load of trouble with this new format. Every time I post, there are two blank posts preceding it. This time, I spent about an hour pouring out my heart as to the music that I love and now it's lost.

Suffice it say: music is like food, color and men. I can't decide on just one and stick with it.

Wasa, wishing she had saved her post.

Old Big Band music. I love it. Nothing speaks to me more than that. You can just sit back and listen or you can dance your ass off to it. NOTHING BETTER!

What kind of music really touches your heart?

Okay, so this is the sort of sentimentally phrased question I usually can't respond to without feeling foolish. But, if we're talking about music that resonates on some deeper (spiritual?) level, I have to admit that there are some songs that send shivers up and down this cynical atheist's spine (in a good way). One is "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen, which, unfortunately, most people will know from the movie Shrek. Oh well.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
    It goes like this
    The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

    Hallelujah
    Hallelujah
    Hallelujah
    Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
    She tied you
    To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
    There's a blaze of light
    In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah
    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
    And even though
    It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

It's complex and painful and mysterious, as all matters of faith must be.

It's after 1 in the morning. Can't sleep, so I thought I'd check this site.

JamesThomas: went to the site you mentioned but wasn't able to listen to any of the songs. Would love to hear it. Have never heard of Dana Cunnningham. I really like certain jazz, especially piano. Used to listen to Herbie Mann, Chuck Mangione. Haven't listened to them for so long. When you posted, it reminded me. Some may think this post is just fluff, but I can't imagine life without music. It's gotten me thru a lot of bad times.

Here's a list of some of my favourite music thru the years

    Ava Maria

Schubert, Brahms Alto Rhapsody especially sung by Marian Anderson, Dvorak Symphony #9 Going Home, Beethoven Symphony #9, Beethoven Concerto #5,

Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye (What’s Going On), Temptations, Drifters (Under the Boardwalk) Sting’s Fragile (all this time cd), Dan Fogelbird, a lot of the old stuff (showing my age) - Spencer Davis Group, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues The Voice (always imagined Uncle Bruce looking like Graeme Edge-the drummer- even back when I used to go to H20) Canadians - Burton Cummings and Gino Vanelli, Lighthouse were good in the 70's. Another Canadian Neil Young Harvest Moon, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Byrds Eight Miles High, Turn , Turn, Turn, Simon & Garfunkel The Boxer, Marc Antoine Urban Gypsy cd,

    Amazing Grace,

Steven Curtis Chapman’s Be Still and Know, Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkin Singers

I could go on and on but it would probably bore you all to tears.

    Azaria,

I'm with you on that. At some of the roughtest spots in my life, music was what got me through, maybe the only thing. It has such incredible power.

Mozart, piano concert #23 first set.

Verdi, prelude for the 3rd act of La Traviata.

these are 2 of the most beautiful pieces ever written imo.
