The great effort required to "remind" the friends to behave civilized, reveals to me that the glowing reports are the result of social pressure and image consciousness rather than elevated ethics or model unselfish love.

What does it suggest about leadership's awareness of how far removed from reality the rank and file is from their literature's stylized imagery?
Lol! So on target. Now, why do you suppose annual convention admonition doesn't take the form of a simple "Let us continue, brothers, in the things we've learned, continuing to make our advancement manifest to all" hmmm? Surely that would suffice if HQ truly entertained even the delusion that JWs are the model citizens and Christians they profess themselves to be. In truth, much of the "counsel" published each (and every!) year shockingly conjures marginally-civilized behaviors no self-respecting "worldling" would ever dare indulge!

And if you don't believe me, just take a look at the hoarded quantities of hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, mouthwash, showercaps, and yes those handy needle and thread repair kits to sew those annoying buttons back on...you know the ones that pop off the pants, or shirts, after you've had 6 hotel complimentary bagels and cream cheese !

We were visiting JW friends a few years back and attended their circuit assembly in a nearby city staying in the same hotel. We were constantly being bothered by some young people across the hall. They would run over and knock on our door and then run back to their room. Obviously, no adults were supervising them. I wasn't sure they were JWs so I called the front desk. The manager came up and told them to quiet down but the kids continued. I waited until the parents returned about 11 pm. I went over and explained what had happened and was rudely told by the parents to mind my own business, (Note: I had not mentioned that I was a JW). The next day at the assembly, our friends introduced us to a couple, and lo and behold it was the same people. They said hello and abruptly walked away. When we explained what happened to our friends, they were aghast. Evidently, this brother was quite prominent in the assembly/convention planning. Not one word of apology or explanation, just rude looks the rest of the assembly.

I still say that more babies are conceived out of wedlock at assemblies of JWs than at any other time, by any other organization.

God! I used to hate having to deliver the annual pre assembly do's and dont's item on the Service Meeting . It usually fell to me as Secretary. It prompted me once to write to the Society and say how the arrangements fell short of meeting the brothers needs. I got a very patronizing reply.

Wow, isn't it amazing that manners get more emphasis than talks on how to treat people with kindness, compassion & love? I used to zone out during brain numbing parts like these. JWs are treated like children who are incapable of thinking for themselves and if people need reminders not to steal that's not saying much about the group as a whole. - Victorian Sky

I remember their warnings and threats if you stayed in hotels that were not on the Society's approved list. That always infuriated my hubby, and of course we never followed that direction anyway. We used to go to St. Petersburg, Fla. at a favorite family resort every year, and catch 1 or 2 days of the assembly at the Bayfront which ran assemblies every weekend, We combined this with visiting old friends who had moved down there, got that out of the way, and enjoyed the rest of our vaction.

I can remember one very nice hotel near the convention site that was never on the list. Too many JWs stayed there even though it wasn't on the list. Brothers in security used to go over and take down the names and congregations from the lapel cards as the people walked by. Then they would go to the POs of those congregations and read them the riot act. They would do that for people who would buy food from the vendors nearby. Just like a police state!

An interesting thought. Perhaps if the Dubs were taught "kindness, compassion and love", their manners wouldn't require scrutiny...
