But they must reject Jesus Christ. If they didn't they would be required to dispose of over 1,000 rules and regulations and boil the whole mess down to 2. They would lose control. It is only by their morass of mumbo jumbo and endless rules that they are able to maintain control over every facet of people's lives.
Rejection of Jesus and religious micromanaging go hand in hand.
Very good thread Met, and a subject that a lot of us obviously have been thinking about tonight.
Tonight, I missed the Memorial for the first time in over 30 years. Basically it's due to what has been stated on this thread. Plus, if indeed I have no share in the Christ and simply must pass the emblems along, why do I need to be there? It's for the anointed, not me - and being a "respectful observer" is an idea I don't see in the Bible. So even from a jw standpoint, it's not for me. The commands about celebrating that event were laid only upon the anointed, looking at it the jw way.
Try saying "the Lord Jesus Christ" or some variation of that phrase in the presence of jws, and they'll immediately begin thinking you're being influenced by some 'false' idea.
Well, I just got back from the memorial....
Sad, confused and guilty... of course.
Metatron:
Good thread, enjoyed the research involved, keep up the work, your threads are always beneficial. Voyager
I read this thread before I attened the memorial, and I got to tell you, I FELT GUILTY attending . The talk was givin by a visiting bethelite. He spent 40 minutes talking about who should and shouldn't partake, and about 10 minutes for the actual passing of the emblems and talking about what they meant. I was very disappointed. Next year I will be celebrating the proper way at home, partaking of the bread and wine.
if you asked 20 people who had never read the bible before, to read the NT and then ask them when they were through..... ..."who are going to be with Jesus someday, who today should drink and eat the bread and wine that Jesus ate and drank with his diciples",.. that you would NEVER get one person who would see Two Folds, Two Groups, A heavenly Class/Earthly Class.....NEVER!
Exactly! Exactly!
Spot on, Gumby.
The irony is that the Borg claims it's a "Bible based" organisation and those who teach otherwise are apostates. Yet the churches for all their supposed "apostasy" are sticking closer to the Bible, without interpretation, than the WTS. Strange that.
Cheers, Ozzie

I have given many Memorial talks, perhaps dozens, and I must agree that what LiquidSky here describes was always a preoccupation I had too.
It now seems to me that the actual partaking of the bread and the wine is what should be emphasized, both by words and actions.
Mrs Ozzie and I went to a celebration this year in the jewish tradition, so that the authentic ingredients, bitter herbs etc, were shared, and then the assembled group partook of the bread and wine, just like Jesus instituted. Then, just as is recorded in the Bible, we sang songs. It was simple, yet significant in every way.
I compare this with what we had known before in the kingdom halls and there was no comparison. The witnesses are fond of quoting this text directing it to the churches, but really it applies to them: "They have a form of godly devotion but prove false to its power."
Cheers, Ozzie
bttt for the Memorial season.
The Memorial is Thursday March 24 this year - how can people be saying they went tonight?
