My question for you is why is that myth so compelling? -Robdar

because humanity has not evolved enough collectively to be able to accept personal responsibility and the possibility that we are already just exactly what we are supposed to be right now for us.

This is a hostile environment and we are creatures loving comfort above all else. Pain, sickness, suffering, dying, death--are all uncomfortable--so therefore they must be unnatural for us!

this is one time I will agree with the witnesses on this subject. First of all the earth is not as old as you think it is. Its only about 7000 years old. Scientist have found human footprints alongside dinosaur prints and inside dinosaur prints. this goes right along with the creation concept in Genesis. God did make animals first then Adam. And after God made everything he said it was good. So there was no death and sickness before the fall. But God told Adam the day he sinned he would die not only physically but spiritually and he introduced evil into the world. If you read genesis youll notice that all animals and humans were to be herbivores. But after the fall you have animals killing each other and man having to kill animals for meat. Just one more thing, did you ever wonder how dinosaur fossils have been found on the top of mountains?(The Great Flood) Now if the bible states this physical fact and you dont believe it how will you ever believe spiritual things like sin and evil that the bible proclaims?

    Robyn;

I am aware of archetypes and myths. My question for you is why is that myth so compelling?

I think it reaches our desire to be forgiven for our past mistakes and our future blunders. This is just one of many archetypes that speak to our human nature.

Why can't Christians accept that perhaps, we (including the animals) were put here only for a short time? Why can't Christians accept that we were never meant to live forever? Why is it so distateful to them?

Good questions, but I can't answer for them. Perhaps a Christian out there could explain it better.

IMO, some people cannot accept death. They don't trust the Creator to have something other planned for us than existence on earth.

That's my thought too. Ironically, I think once you come to accept your own mortality, that's when you actually really begin to appreciate life.

I am a Christian, btw. I do not look at the cruxifiction as a "ransom sacrifice" of a perfect man to repay the sins of another perfect man. I look at Christ, as God incarnate, as coming here, to earth, to teach us basic truths. The truth that we must love one another because Love is the language that we must speak in order to communicate with God and that death is not all that we fear it to be.

I do not look at his cruxifiction as him redeeming us to him but his way of redeeming himself to us. Many people fear death and get angry at God because death exists. Coming to earth to be cruxified was God's way to show us that he was not too good to go through death himself in order to show us that we will live again.

I never thought about it from that perspective. That makes more sense than the JW point of view.

Demar: I won’t tell you what or whatnot to believe that is up to you, however you do owe it to yourself to examine the source of this information you are getting. Upon closer examination, you may find it is just a tad less then: accurate, unbiased, and for that matter scientific.

As an aside, don’t you think it was very clever of God to make salt water and fresh water fish and somehow preserve both types during the flood when all water was mixed together, and then put all the thousands of different types of little fishes back in their natural environment again after the flood was over? I’ll bet there were both fresh and salt-water tanks on the Arc. I also thought that it was pretty clever of God to equip so many herbivores with the ability to deliver lethal poison just in case one day they had to become carnivores. I guess God looked into the future and saw the need down the road.

    Demar, are you sure??

Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him."
So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (Gen 2:18,19 RSV)

Prior to the flood of Noah's day man lived for hundreds of years according to the Bible. Is it possible that when the firmament came down during the flood that the lifespan of man and beast was shortened? Did the firmament come down because it could no longer be supported above the earth and not because God chose that time to kill off humanity?

Does the Bible's story of the flood really explain a natural occurence and cloak it in God's wrath? Would a flood have occurred even if mankind had repented?
