    Hey, I hope I'm wrong !

There is a danger though in not taking things like this seriously enough as the time to effectively contain and control a potentially devastating disease is limited.

There was a phone in this morning and the doctor from the WHO was reassuring people that there wasn't a big cause for panic etc...

He was challenged by another doctor who asked about when the disease was infectious. The WHO Doctor (Dr Who?! ) said that there was no proof that the disease was infectious before the symptom appeared so they were happy for people to travel as long as they did not have a temperature etc ...

The guy asked a v.good question: Do you have proof that the disease is not infectious at this stage or are you taking absense of proof as proof of absence?

The WHO doctor admitted that there was no proof and if the disease was infectious earlier then it would be much worse and spread more rapidly.

I think we would better being safe than sorry. There is a lot more at stake if we're wrong than just a bit on inconvenience for a few weeks.

    Simon:

Make no mistake, this is BIG. Even if we are unaffected directly, it will hit global trade and cause major problems.

I agree, only it's much scarier because the spread is so easily done. Not like AIDS where you can make a choice to participate in risky sex.

Unfortunately too many aren't taking this seriously, which is the worst thing about SARS!

Just curious....are meetings still being held in Toronto? What about assemblies and conventions planned for the summer? Are the dubs supposed to be immune to s.a.r.s?

Its possible for viral diseases to mutate...such as pneumonic plague. There is even a pneumonic form of rabies. What if s.a.r.s merges with AIDS? Personally, I'm avoiding any large gatherine of people until this mess blows over...if it ever does.

Simon, according to the Infectious Disease Specialists, it is West Nile that is a bigger concern here in Alberta.

It seems to have been contained in Canada, hopefully China will be able ot get it under control (an epedemic in a third world country will probably mean we lose the fight and opportunity to contain it)

The west-nile virus was big news last time we were over ... apparently it was affecting birds or something as well as people?
