Department stores in the UK either dead or dying, House of Fraser, Debenhams, British Home Stores, all object lessons inbeing in the wrong place but also loaded with debt repayments and massive store rentals. Once stores flogged off the stores they owned, only to have to rent them back, was the beginning of the end. Selling the Family Silver inevitably leads to ruin. Sears reined all across North America due its capability of offering a wide array of different items from children toys to lawn mowers .
They sold such a diverse selection, when are family went shopping there the kids would go to the toy section, mum would go the clothing section and dad would go the tool section.
Try doing that in any big box store today .

Consumers Distributing (Canada) had the same retail protocol of you picking items from a catalogue and sales personnel hurriedly retrieving them from their internal warehouse.
No idea why they went under years ago.

Sears once had the blue-collar customer. Tools. Appliances. Work clothes. Then they decided to compete with more upscale stores in fashion. Perhaps WalMart garnered the blue collar crowd and they had to change business plans. They left the catalog business which had been strong in rural markets, but doubtful if they'd compete with Amazon today.

Sears had become the home of disinterested sales personnel, filthy floors, poorly stocked shelves and rising prices. I gave up on them years ago because it became an exercise in customer abuse. Not sorry to see it go.

Sears Canada tried to reinvent itself, and failed.
WT has been desperately trying to do the same.
Not going to totally disappear, but WT will NEVER thrive again.

So did Canadian Tire in 1955, not the cause of folding.
