In the late 70's, there were a lot of free thinkers in Bethel. They had a measure of independence. Then they cleaned house. Do you think that there could actually be a revolt or major change that would seriously affect the Watchtower Society? Or is this just wishful thinking???

Depends on who is doing the free thinking. Bethelites ain't got NO power, so I think they could rattle their cages so loud you could hear them all the way in Cincinnati and the GB would take no notice.

It would be great if it happened, but they would just dis-fellowship them all and employ a new batch of suckers.
As long as there are new people being born, there will be new people taken in by the witnesses.
It proves it with their changing doctine. New ones don't know about it, as they are not told about it, so are unaware.
I'm afraid there will always be new blood for them to abuse.

If bad press continues, less people will become Witnesses............ I have friends that talk to a GB member and from what they say, he is all ears regarding their views on certain matters that are not in alignment with the official teachings. Perhaps, the Bethel lites are not heavy enough to make something happen, but it would be interesting if there were cracks in the armor at the helm.....Time will tell.

Minimus,
Do you think that the 'younger' members of the GB may try and change things. I know they're still 60+ but they will see the damage that the changes have done in the past, or are they only given the position because they tow the party line?

I think that since the "old guys" are nearing death's door, the "new guys" are open and receptive to critical thinking. I wonder, though, if the GB really DO make all these heavy decisions for the organization. I really think that the lawyers are the ones that manage most everything. I know people that actually believe that ALL the publications are written by the anointed "slave". And if they are not directly written by them, they believe a GB member proofreads everything that comes off the presses......I don't think so.

Raymond Franz points makes that point in Crisis of Conscience.
What do they think the writing department does then. One brother once told me that all the annointed around the world write articles for the magazines. What a load of baloney.
The GB probably have little to do with the writing now.

As a "class", the Governing Body cannot see. They are too old to write. They need help getting their Depends on. The GB (the Slave) is on automatic pilot and has been since FW Franz left this "earthly scene". All we get is the same old crap, in every publication. I think that sooner or later, they are going to HAVE to do something dramatic.

You would have to knock out the command and control structure first.

The Great Tribulation is going to begin with a nuclear attack on New York City. Bethel will be gone too. Jehovah's Witnesses will have to figure out what they are going to do at that point.
