Zoom Can Control My Home Camera? Maybe Some Tech Help Needed.

Even though I am partially in the IT area of business, I don't understand here how people are saying that someone can control a camera through Zoom. So if I am sitting with a shirt and tie, someone on the other end can can control the camera and see that I am naked from the waist down and periodically have an itch? Or quickly move to the side and have a beer?

Are they expecting some sort of 360 degree camera?

Or if I am on camera, can't I just minimize the screen, let them watch me, and watch TV?

    Your comments are appreciated.

I thought it was a just a live visual audio camera, like Skype or facetime conference thing, I’d never heard of Zoom until a few days ago myself.

Only the way hackers might turn a camera. i have mine taped over in general for that reason. We have found out they can hear us at will so the comment I made about the fad groucho eyebrows may have been heard.,

I posted about the intrusion of wanting the cameras on, us dressed up, and no distracting background, and having a fi field service type meeting extra. People are unable to see where they aim, hrnce the comment about being naked. We have seen big gulps, bare feet, ceilings, foreheads, and some lousy makeup. We have been told our camera was off. The only phone calls have been to make sure we dont miss meetings. Next they want remote student skits here

This could make some interesting, as they call it, "amateur porn."

Zoom have had some pretty abysmal security failures.

No company who pulls shit like this deserves trust or business from people.

    ROAD TO NOWHERE:

I’m no longer in the religion so this doesn’t affect me..

But, I don’t believe in the idea of anybody who is not a relative being able to see in my house with a camera. Somebody’s home is sacred and not an extension of the kingdom hall.

Listening in is one thing..but I would draw the line at them being able to SEE me - whether Skype or Zoom which I never heard of before.. This is going too far IMO.

Dubs have some problems using zoom at the moment.. They are new to such tools and clumsy with it, as I wouuld be. It will improve.

I read that you can in fact choose a virtual backdrop to your head, make it look as though you live in a super home. Also, someone I know managed to have no picture of herself, just a black square for her presence. It still showed her name though

Zoom existed long before the JWs used it. Nobody can follow you with your camera. They can't even force you to turn it on. You can have a static image, your name, hell you can even just call in on your phone using the meeting ID and a phone number.

People will be clumsy with it and that can be funny, or just annoying. But you can turn your video off during the meeting, it's only engaged while in a meeting, you can mute your mic, use a static image, create a background, use a green screen and get creative, use many types of devices, etc.

No - zoom built in the ability to do just this! Someone just needed to direct your to a site or post content somewhere that would trigger a local request to an unsecured web-server that turned on your camera.

If you're using a webcam and it's just "there" on your device (e.g. built in to your laptop screen) then the only way to be 100% sure it's off and not transmitting is to use a physical shield. You can get little stick on ones from Amazon, e.g.

    https://www.amazon.com/Hoiukiper-Portable-Protector-Protect-Security/dp/B07RYD3K9G/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=webcam+shield&qid=1585070993&sr=8-7

Some separate webcams come with a physical screen but can also be rotated to not face you or unplugged entirely when not in use.
