I gotta tell you, I often fantasised about having a "Mad Max" car. One that looks like shit, that I could care less if people bumped into, but that would work like hell. You know, the type of car that people would actually be afraid of knowing full well that could be the type of vehicule that won't stay at the site of an accident?

Maybe that is what they were going for. That being said, I can achieve my objective by pimping an old car and it would be the fraction of the cost of that beast. So, not sure I understand the purpose here.

There is some benefit to driving an old, really beaten up car, full of dents and scratches - you can merge into traffic no problem, because it screams "I don't stop" and most other people in their shiny cars will.

I think Tesla and Musk have officially jumped the shark.

Too right , looks like they didn't spend much time on making an appealing design for this vehicle, perhaps just exploiting their name brand.

This will most definitely end up a fail.

The preconceive thought might have some possibility in the market place.

I'd like to know the story behind the windows. Is the Tesla Armor Glass really that fragile or did somebody not bother to tell him they'd mocked up a vehicle without it?

So they have taken 200,000 deposits, which is $20m, just in the first few days.

I'm sure they'll take more, let's say they easily get at least 500,000 or $50m.

They don't deliver a truck so in 5+ years time, they have to give the money back.

I'm guessing it won't be adjusted for inflation, which itself is a good deal - a $50m interest free loan ... like free money. How much interest could you make just by investing it?

And of course if Tesla goes bust, those people will all be last in the queue for assets.

And some will forget about it, won't be traceable, will die etc... so not all will have to be given back.

Pretty sweet deal, and all you had to do was mockup a truck body.

TD: My guess ism that it is not armoured glass but a laminate like windshields as compared to a tempered side window in run of the mill ford, chevy, rams.

True bullet proof glass could always be an option. all spin offs from his space program. Instant cremation too,

P.S. yeah, there is a story on BBC about a previous crack, which would happen on a laminate, shatter a tempered pane.

There is no such thing as bad publicity. Cop being unable to get at you to see your license.

Which makes it useless ... because a shopping trolley hitting the size of the vehicle or going over a pot-hole might cause the same fracture, resulting in the same failure.

If you're selling something as "bulletproof" there are questions to answer: what type of bullets? how many times?

There are also questions about what happens in an accident - can emergency services get to you in your armour-plated electric coffin?

Yeah.. or since you armored car doesn’t buckle during a collision, what happens when two armored cars collide? Does the resultant elastic collision mean the passengers experience the complete inertial change? Is there anything left for emergency services to get?

Sorry I haven’t been following the thread closely - was Musk selling this car as debt proof (or close) too?

No matter how much high tech gets placed into something, ugly never sells well making a created object unmarketable or successfully marketable .

Not to say an electrically powered work vehicle isn't a good idea.

If a competition was run where thousands of preschool age children designed a car, and the winner of the competition was judged by a 3 year old boy, you’d probably have the Elon Musk truck.

The kids would love smashing windows at the big reveal.
