Religiots are easily duped and taken advantage of (but they like to do that to others, so meh).
It seems like he 'conveniently' believes something when he has something to gain from it. Sadly, some are so devoid of morality that even though they are normally willing to judge anyone and everyone for the mildest transgressions, suddenly no forgiveness is too much forgiveness. They will literally take anyone as a convert.
