You could be "stuck" at the university. Big deal. In this type of emergency, it is possible to suspend your studies for a semester, or part thereof, to take care of it. Or, you could be stuck working 18 hour days, 7 days a week--and you only get 3 days for the death of a parent. Is it better to skip college and then work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week to not even make enough to pay your $5,000 monthly rent? Or to be a burden to your parents by living with them until they get too old and die?

I think in a few cases long-tine, full-time servants are helped to go home in the event of a serious need, or death, but it probably depends on who you are. The sad thing is that there have been numerous talks asking Bethelites, Missionaries etc if it is really necessary to leave their 'assignment' to care for parents if there are Other Family Members who can do it!. One could be "stuck" in the assignment as well.

Of late they haven't even been pitching the preaching full time as the focus. It's all construction, of the "thousands" of Kingdom Halls and other buildings, they supposedly "need"...and for what?

    HOSER:

That's a good question and I’d like to think so.

Some years back I read an awful story in reverse. As the story goes: a JW missionary in a very rural backwards area of the world (don’t remember where) supposedly had his missionary friend or partner die… Don’t remember the details if he couldn’t get any money or assistance, etc. But he ended up having to personally cremate his friend out in the field or wherever. 😮 When I read this missionary horror story it impressed upon me the insanity of it all.

Because the religion is so secretive and JWs are reluctant to even talk about their bad experiences in Bethel - stories like this one would hardly be known about. So, who knows about somebody having to come home for the death of a parent?

As a jw in a university town, I saw many, many exceptions for attending a university. 1) if father not a jw, son is a jw not living at home, the elders decided he had to obey his non-jw father and go to university. 2) Could go to university, if kept up with meetings and preaching 3) Could go to university if lived at home and in Christian environment 3) Elder has big bucks, child allowed to go to university 4) and on and on...Only really works with jws who follow "men" and feel their everlasting life depends on having the elders approval. At one time, the organization was sending certain Bethelites to university to get a law degree, looked for members how had a degree in some field which required university degree to handle the organization'sl needs. I'm sure some of you know jws that skirted this so-called requirement of the WTS without negative results. Living in a fairly large city with a large university, many exceptions ending up being here.

Oh yes - how often have I seen that happen (with a blatant example being in this city, where the son in question is a highly respected electrical engineer).

Otherwise, though, it is very much a case "I've got mine, but you are not allowed to have yours".

The story means that the father didn’t go to university and land a well paying job. Enough to afford life insurance or have money set aside to support his own family, even allowing his children to attend University.

Attending Uni is not an expensive venture for a parent with student loans available and the ease of working part time whilst studying. Parents can help pay those student loans down the track, when it becomes easier to do so, if they wish. Many courses can be done mostly online as well. Here in Australia, most kids still live at home whilst attending.

My goodness, it would be a poor parent that required their child to miss out on Uni due to the need of supporting his family, it does happen though and more often than not, it is due to the deficiencies of the parents. Being a JW easily turns the best of parents into irresponsible ones.

I couldn’t even picture the guilt, as a parent, I would have felt had I put my child or children in such a situation, particularly when I consider it my responsibility to see that their future is as good as it can be. This is very, very bad planning but in the JW situation, a flawed devotion to an organisation and their beliefs.

This is just more of the Watchtower indoctrinating followers into not doing something, like further education because of some highly unlikely, horror event. It’s prohibiting and continues to create a depressing outlook for both parents and children who have a natural drive to improve their lot in life.

I’m not saying that parents should send their kids to Uni or that kids should go. It’s a waste of time and money if the child has neither the talent or desire. Trade school or an apprenticeship is ideal for many and these days, in Australia, can be much better paid. With AI technology advancing it’s wise to research the best options. But the Watchtower doesn’t even encourage or promote.

Of course, it’s far better for children to be spending hours and hours letter writing or standing at a cart, or day after day, in labour intensive, boring tasks at Bethel.

Why is this even an issue? It's been settled by the world.

This is what AI says on the subject "Trade schools and universities offer different paths to higher education. Trade schools focus on hands-on training for specific trades, while universities provide a broader academic education with opportunities for research and diverse knowledge. Trade schools are typically shorter and more affordable, allowing for quicker entry into the workforce. Universities offer longer programs leading to degrees and a wider range of career options. "

Even "Chris" the electrician would have found that out!

While we certainly need skilled workers such as electricians, the aforementioned "Chris" would find his career options would be much wider were he to have completed the degree course in electrical engineering. (All other things being equal, too, remuneration is much more attractive for those sporting a bachelor degree in engineering).

I am talking here as somebody who spent the last several decades of his working life in roles best described as being that of a "Busted @$$ Electrician" - and who if had his time all over again, would have attempted the bachelor of engineering course from the outset.

But would a person trained as an electrician want to do the wider range of career options that the degree would offer?
