In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus foretold that earthquakes “in one place after another” would be part of the sign of the last days clímaxing in the great tribulation.

What could Jesus possibly have meant? Using a phone app nowadays, there are earthquakes detected in one place after another but is this what Jesus meant and did they have so many earthquakes throughout the centuries affter his prophecy or are these modern day detected earthquakes unique to this epoch? How can we be sure unequivocally that modern day earthquakes are part of the sign fulfilling Bible prophecy?

    @ Fisherman

You mention earthquakes. Has there been an unprecedented increase in the number, severity and/or loss of life from earthquakes etc. since 1914?

If an escalation since 1914 in earthquake frequency, severity and human loss are a sign of Christ's presence, then logically their diminishing since 1914 can only witness to his non-presence.

A comparison of earthquake victims 1715-1783 vrs. 1915-1983

The annual average deaths caused by earthquakes worldwide

    - from 1715 - 1783 (68 years) was 19,911.

    - from 1915 - 1983 (68 years) was 17,545

nb. given that the population during the 20th century was 6 times that of the 18th century, earthquakes of 18th century, in terms of ratio of human destruction, far surpasses that of the 20th century.

nb. the annual average deaths caused by earthquakes in the 68 years preceding 1914 was between 17,149 and 18, 671 Do earthquakes, give us any indication or sign that Christ returned in 1914?

When we physically see Jesus getting here, we'll know. We won't have to ask. We'll know he's here. Then we'll look back and say "oh, yeah, there were a bunch of earthquakes around that time..."

    "Keep on the watch!"

(He's not here yet. When he's here, we'll know.)

I don't know about earthquakes but my goodness there are certainly fires in one place after another.

Everyday you open your newspaper or News App, there's a picture of wildfire's somewhere in the world.

Earthquakes could be used figuratively to symbolize political upheavals.

OK! What do wars, famines and pestilences symbolize?

  • TxNVSue2023

Famine- the widespread absence of spiritual truth/food.

Pestilence- spiritual sickness. As described in 2 Timothy 3:1-7. Mentally & spiritually diseased.

Example: Our current generation of young people can't even tell what gender they were born! They play make believe with their gender & pronouns.

    Hi Sue,

    And wars symbolize ?

  • TxNVSue2023

Conflict between good & evil. Between Satan & Jesus's kingdom.

    Hi Sue,

So the composite sign Jesus gave wasn't really about wars and rumours of wars and nation rising against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

He was really saying you will know that I am present when you see a significant increase in the conflict between good and evil, a widespread absence of spiritual truth, spiritual sickness and mental disease and political upheavals in different places....which all clearly came to pass starting in 1914.

Do you have any confirmation of this symbolism in the Watchtower or Awake?
