I can give a very recent example of this in my local area. This guy was the longest serving CO in the country. I remember him as a CO when I was a little kid. Tbh a bit of an unusual guy, who I really didn't like. But he was a company man, who was the top brass his whole life.
So what happens. 10 years ago the local bethel here get sold for millions. The money and operations gets moved off shore. He's now elderly, no use to them, and is let go.
To be fair I did hear a comment that Wt was giving him some sort of assistance. But I have no way of verifying this, or the amount. Can anyone confirm this please. So I was told, he then moves into a very substandard apartment. The local witnesses then find him better accomodation. Better, but not by much. I believe now he was recently put into a rest home, as he is now suffering from dementia. For which the tax payer now meets the shortfall, for which Wt doesn't pay. I couldnt imagine Wt fitting the bill for $2000-$2500 weekly in rest home care. This guy can count his lucky stars that this country has a very good welfare system for those who are unable to care for themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if the government also pays to bury him, as he dies penniless.
I'm guessing on a whole, with in time, as his dementia worsens. He will be forgotten about. So sad, for a guy who gave his all, to be treated the way he did. This is coming from me, a guy who really didn't even like him.
