In Australia, I've observed most parents bring toys and blankets for young children, and they generally nap on the floor during meetings. Primary aged kids generally colour in and teens just slump boredly and hang out at the drink fountain. The times I've seen kids taken out is usually to calm them by holding and bouncing, or taking them out to eat or rest. Occasionally I saw a kid get a swat but mostly just settled down with a,little cuddle, talking to or short walk. Maybe Australian JWs r more lax, by it is also against the law here to hit kids, and most people really frown upon it.
