But donations to WTS count as expenses

what does the WTS care if the congregation is in red so long as they are getting funds?

WTS owns the KH, cong. owns the bills. The elders will pull out their wallets when the CO tells them too

When you say "spent more" do you mean actual cash expenditures, Or do you mean that they are unable to absorb their share of "allocated expenses." Make sure we understand the context - "allocated expenses" include home office costs that have nothing to do with the day to day operations of an individual congregation.

My guess is that local congregations are doing just fine. However, the Wt is shifting costs to the local congregations. An accounting trick used to justify bad decisions.

Their expenditures exceeded income for that year. If you spend more than you get, even if the expenses are donations the bank account will be depleted

Figures don't distinguish between maintenance and donations just what comes in and what comes out.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your OP, but in 2016, there were 1,613 congregations in the UK. So even if you took the high of 689 congregations being in the red in 2015 that is not half but closer to a third. Besides, the number of congregations in the red in 2016 was an improvement over 2015 and 2017 in turn is a further improvement.

    Steve,

    there are 1,540 UK congregations.

Almost half is 40% which is 616 congregations. Two of the years exceeded those numbers and most congregations have not reported for 2017.

I did the data pull this past weekend and have all the income and expenditure numbers.

    40% is almost half.

All the results and analysis will be available in a few weeks. There are different data sets to merge and dedupe.

I would like to add that my list includes congregations in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. If the British Branch are including the Channel Islands and overseas territories, I don't know about that.

truthseeker, turning 40% into "almost half" is inaccurate statistically.

A number in the late 40s could qualify as "almost half".

Besides, the numbers from earlier years need to be divided by the number of congregations in those years not the current year in which there is an overall reduction in total congregations.

The 2017 Yearbook which reports the numbers for 2016 has 1,613 congregations that year in the UK.
