The CDC estimates influenza deaths in the U.S. this season (October 2019 - March 2020) at 24,000 to 62,000.

I think I know where you're going with this on a Covid-19 thread, but I hope I'm wrong.

I agree. The argument of how this is similar to (or needs to be handled as) the flu is an old one (if you can consider week 4 or so of an argument during a pandemic "old").

The true measure is not the death rate only. The contagion rate is a factor. The flu is like being chased by your grandma - Covid is like being chased by a Doberman.

The curve in Italy looks like its flatter only because its on a logarithmic scale. Take a look at the scale on the sides. I think we have a long way to go.

Yes, but when looking at something with exponential growth, the scale helps straighten the line so it's easier to see a trend such as the rate going up or down, even though it is still exponential.

It's easier to flatten the numbers in absolute terms when the numbers are small. We all had that capability, we could have quarantined people and prevented travel from infected areas. We didn't because our leaders lacked the political will and were asleep at the wheel.

A combination of political correctness and willful incompetence will have cost hundreds of thousands of lives if things go well (millions if not) and hurt millions of others through financial hardship, unemployment and so on.

At the very least, people should lose their jobs and be prosecuted for this. If there was real justice some would swing from lampposts.

This is interesting - reports on people's travel habits available in your area, so you can see how people are obeying the lockdown (or not), all based on mobile phone location data:

Nearly 50% of the cases in the US are in the NYC and surrounding area.

Still the increases do not appear to be going up exponentially s they were previously. The graph Simon posted yesterday is encouraging.

Can anyone tell me if it's OK now to shower or are we still under the "Wash Your Hands" Order?

Looks like the US and UK are not adhering to the "stay at home" calls as much as some others:

I heard it was OK to wear a mask and gloves to go grocery shopping, but when I got there everyone else was wearing clothes! ;)

This is the kind of information that people need to have, we need to know how critical things are so we can judge whether we want to risk going to buy supplies or not etc...

Governments of all levels need to be producing this information and explaining what they are doing about it.

It also shows us how long we need to be doing the critical / intense lock-downs and prepares people that things are going to get worse before they get better. Expect bad news over the next 2-3 weeks.

In the UK people are allowed to walk in their local park as long as they stay at least 2m from people from other households.
