Suspect in Alaskan school stabbings ignores judge

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, May 8 (Reuters) - A man arrested for allegedly slashing the throats of four Anchorage children outside their school refused to answer a judge's questions at a court hearing on Tuesday, then urged onlookers to kill themselves and their children.

Jason Pritchard, 33, was arraigned in state Superior Court on four charges of attempted murder and four charges of first-degree assault.

He did not respond when addressed during his first court appearance after the attack, and court officers strapped him into his chair after he tried several times to stand up and walk away.

When he started shouting, they took him out of the room.

"Kill the young children. Kill yourself," he said as he was taken away. "Kill the young children first, then kill yourself."

Pritchard was arrested after an attack at Mountain View Elementary School before classes started Monday morning.

He is accused of attacking children who were in the playground and lining up for breakfast service offered to low-income families.

Four boys, 7 to 9 years old, received life-threatening stabs in the neck, the Anchorage Police Department said. They were sent to local hospitals and some were listed, at one point, in critical condition.

Pritchard was cornered in the school by teachers, and police using rubber bullets subdued him.

As of late Monday, two of the boys had been released from the hospital, one was listed in serious condition, and one was listed in fair condition, according to television reports.

Pritchard has a long history of psychiatric problems, according to the charging document filed by the state Department of Law.

He has a history of stalking and threatening children, with incidents reported in the Kenai Peninsula, according to the document. He also has a history of drunk and reckless driving, according to the document.

Pritchard has had religious delusions and tried to castrate himself to make himself more pure, according to the document.

He has argued repeatedly that children should be killed to protect them from sin.

According to the document, Pritchard had been a practicing member of the Jehovah's Witnesses but was excommunicated for visiting massage parlors.

    Man Arraigned for Stabbing Children

    By MARY PEMBERTON

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A man charged with slashing the throats of four children at their elementary school screamed ``Kill the young children. Kill yourself'' after a court appearance Tuesday.

Jason Pritchard, 33, had refused to answer questions during his arraignment on four counts each of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. All four children survived.

``Are you Mr. Pritchard? Well, I'm told that you are,'' District Judge Natalie Finn said. ``Do you understand what I'm saying? Do you hear me?''

Pritchard, who was not represented by a lawyer, did not respond. But as the hearing ended and Pritchard was led from the court, police had to restrain him as he yelled:

``Kill the young children. Kill yourself. Kill the young children first, then kill yourself.''

Pritchard is charged with stabbing the children Monday as they were waiting at Mountain View Elementary School for the school's breakfast program to begin. He dropped the knife and was arrested after police shot him three times with bean bag projectiles, authorities said.

Police searched the area around Pritchard's car and found a handwritten note entitled, ``Remember Columbine,'' prosecutors said.

``Also you must have the faith that killing little children is their only hope and don't you be afraid of wicked people killing you and sending you to meet God & Jesus,'' the note said, according to authorities.

Cody Brown, 7, was in serious condition and Stephan Hansell, 8, was in fair condition after receiving 34 stitches. Eric Moy, 9, and Billy Moy, 8, were released from the hospital Tuesday.

``I get the impression it was for shock value. It seems he's doing this crazy act,'' said Keith Leonard, grandfather of the Moy brothers, after Pritchard's outburst Tuesday.

The children's grandmother, Wilma Leonard, said Pritchard needed psychiatric treatment.

``He's got some severe problems. He needs help,'' she said.

Pritchard was being held on $2 million cash bail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday.

Authorities say that when police arrived at the school, teacher Jeff Harriman was standing between Pritchard and Hansell, who was lying on the floor bleeding. Harriman was using a student desk to keep Pritchard away from the boy.

An officer helped the teacher and the boy flee the room. As the officers kept Pritchard at gunpoint, he was talking about sending ``his little brothers and sisters to Jehovah,'' according to the court documents.

Pritchard, who was born in Eugene, Ore., apparently was living in his car at the time of Monday's attacks. He had been arrested 13 times since 1994 on charges that include assault, stalking, criminal trespassing and driving while intoxicated, police said. He used the Southcentral Counseling Center in Anchorage as a mailing address.

I did some searching about this case this morning. I found this portion of an Anchorage PD report:

    6 December 1998; APD report #98-67757; court case 3AN-M98-10400

APD officers were dispatched to the Kingdom Hall Church on 6 December 1998 reference a suicidal man. When police arrived, they saw several men restraining Pritchard. Police interviewed church members, who said that Pritchard entered the church about halfway through services. Then, he stood up, and began shouting that "everyone must commit suicide to see God." Officer Fifer's report. Pritchard continued for about five minutes, and was asked to leave. When he refused, he was escorted off the property. He returned, would not leave, and was removed a second time. He returned as police arrived. Sergeant Webster noted in his report, that, as police arrived, he was attempting to return to the church a third time.

The laundry list of crazed behavior from this guy is almost unbelievable. His cult experience has fed his insanity in the most horrible ways. I wonder which came first, the cult indoctrination or the insanity?

Well..it was my experience that most of the studies I was involved in were with people who were emotionally unbalanced to start with. The wacko stuff they feed you in the organization only fuels that. It gives the unbalanced people a cause celeb like that man who murdered his wife and kids a little while back. It doesnt MATTER if the man had ever been baptized...if he was acting on what he was TAUGHT there.

Which makes me believe that if the society said someday to pull a Jonestown...a huge chunk of followers would do it.

You know, it only serves to invalidate us further when we clasp to every article that makes the witnesses look bad. It is, in my opinion, ridiculous to point to an isolated case of obvious mental imbalance and paint an entire organization with the crazy brush. We have little enough credibility as it is people. Let's not grasp at straws.

Oh get REAL!!! JWs proclaim loudly that they are the happiest, sanest, most well-adjusted people on the planet. It's hardly 'grasping at straws' to bring to attention the weirdos that are influenced in their latent insanities by the cult doom messages.

This guy tried to kill four little kids because of his religious indoctrination. If you had bothered to go read the Anchorage news articles, you would find that his obsession with the three meetings and constant Bible study were a concern to the stepfather he lived with. His irrational behavior was definitely exacerbated by his cult involvement.

He may be an extreme case, but his religious obsessions are definitely a product of JW Bible teaching methods. I'm sorry if you somehow feel 'invalidated' by someone sharing the facts, but displaying the worst effects of cultic thinking is never ridiculous.

YOu have no proof that his behaviour is the product of his association with the Witnesses. Killing children to send them home to Jesus does not even sound like JW theology. Instead you make broad assumptions that fit in neatly with your preconceived bias. Even if he was influenced by the witnesses, they are no more responsible for his crimes then a comic book writer would be if some madman went around killing people pretending he was the Joker. It's your "Witnesses cause all evil" drum beating that will forever keep "apostates" on the fringes of credibility.

    Naeblis,

MommieDark did not say "Witnesses cause all evil." That is hyperbole on YOUR part, and if you're honest, you will recognize that.

I haven't yet read the Anchorage papers and perhaps they DO have more insight on whether or not Pritchard's involvement with the Witnesses influenced his behavior.

I agree with you that cases like this are evidence of EXTREME mental imbalance. But I also agree with Loves that many unhappy or unbalanced people are attracted to the Witnesses in the first place, making the "we are the happy people serving our Happy God, Jehovah" line most certainly misleading at best, a downright lie at worst.

Yes, Pritchard is a VERY extreme case, but it is not so hard to follow his reasoning (if you're a JW!). If the children all die before puberty perhaps they won't grow up to be dirty pedophiles like himself (hence the attempts at castration?) and be doomed to die at Armageddon! -- OR -- If the children all die now, BEFORE Armageddon, they'll all have a chance at everlasting life, which they might lose if they grow up and commit fornication of some kind (visiting massage parlors?)

This man obviously HATES himself and is a pervert. He is NOT representative of all Jehovah's Witnesses, of course not! But to me, at least, these scenarios would never have entered his mind if he didn't love/hate children at the same time (love them because he has a sick attraction to their unspoiled innocence/hate them because he has a sick attaction to their unspoiled innocence) and wish to help them avoid the agony of his own miserable, conflicted existence by keeping them pure.

As the Watchtower Society promotes the distinct teaching that those who die before Armageddon will be resurrected to paradise on earth, the children are safer dead! Safe from Mr. Pritchard, safe from possible destruction later. From his point of view it's the kind thing.

Also, the confusion about bringing them "home" to Jesus? Well, he IS mentally unbalanced and this COULD BE a confusion with doctrines of Christendom. Nonetheless, Jesus DOES love the little children. And it IS Jesus who is coming as King to fight the battle at Armageddon and oversee Jehovah's Kingdom thereafter, so perhaps not.

I'm with Mommie: "His cult experience has fed his insanity in the most horrible ways."

Agreed, my comment may have been exaggerated but no more than the reaction to that story. If it wasn't the witnesses something else would have fueled his imbalance. That's what I'm saying. Where do you draw the line? Is everyone in the world responsible for the crimes of the insane because they may derive motivation from them? In my mind it is very irresponsible to put blame in an entire group for the actions of one insane person. Like I said, even if he DID gain his motivation from their teachings, they are not responsible for his murders. The witnesses are a strange case. They believe in the destruction of the wicked but few of them really LOOK and understand the murder that this represents. They don't see t he dead children and can thus respond with horror when they see stories of murder and death, ignoring the fact that those very people would die by God's hands. I just caution against generalizing an entire religion for the actions of a few. I don't mean to attack anyone.

Here's the scenario in this dude's sick mind:

Death is the only gaurantee that you'll get to live during the "thousand" years and then possibly live to eternity. THAT is what's going through this sick bastards's mind. That is the mindset that the WTS has instilled, and some warped f*cker has taken it to heart! For God's sake, he just wants everyone to live! But they have to die first.
