Do you think you will ever experience terrorism yourself?

    Just a hypothetical question...

do you think that the government would exagerate the terrorist threat (i.e. false orange alerts...closing down airports for no apparant reason etc) to heighten the threat in the public's mind so that they can bring in more restrictive regulations (i.e. Patriot act II) to supposedly protect the people, while eroding the civil liberties.?

Without these terrorists, these new laws would NEVER have been passed.....just asking.

Perhaps if I lived in a cloistered world, I wouldn't. It could happen anytime, anywhere.

Not really, unless I'm taking a hiking tour through Palestine or Egypt. But, here in America? Remotely possible, but very unlikely.

Searchfortruth, as usual I agree with you. I would not at all be surprised if the government raised the terror alert to keep the public on edge and help pass bills that normally would not have passed. Unfortunatly it will backfire. As the public gets more and more used to living under an orange alert or other threat they become more and more lax.

Exactly! There's no reason to pin all terrorism on one religion. Fundies are fundies no matter which way you slice them.

I live in an area that has a huge middle eastern population as well as being a huge border town with Canada (our enemy LOL) and I don't feel the slightest bit threatened. If anything I feel safer.

Having grown up on military bases during the Cold War, my viewpoint might be different. I always knew that a nuclear warhead was aimed at my home. I couldn't let that spoil my day.

If I were traveling in countries where terrorism is a daily or frequent event, yes, I would be more at risk.

Otherwise, my chances of being hit by a drunk driver is much higher.

Remember, Osama didn't inflict enough damage the first time he bombed the towers from the bottom, so he tried again, this time aiming at the top. Probably not everyone thought about being a victim of terrorism that day, but I am sure those that were there the first time knew that the possibility did exist that it could happen again.

I live between New York City and Washington, DC. The flight path of one of the planes that slammed into the towers went directly over my house that day. I saw the face of shock and pain of someone I knew who lost a friend and left behind a wife and baby. A family relative watched as people jumped from the towers to their horrible death on the pavement below.

The government tells us that there are terrorists in the US today. They have been very quiet here since September 2001. Why the silence? Why not blow themselves up on a bus full of people like in Isreal? That would surely please Osama to kill even more Americans. I have to tell you that it worries me that things have been so quiet and time has gone by without a terrorist incident in the US. But, will I personally be a victim?... maybe not an immediate victim, but physcologically we are all victims when a terrorist event happens.

I feel like I have about the same chance of being attacked by terrorists as, say, Phyllis Diller has of being carried off to a terrorist's harem.

I live about 20 minutes from a major power plant(Diablo Canyon). I was a little worried right after 911. My bosses wife is a nuclear engineer there and she told me that It is probably one of the most safest places to be if something happened. It is extremely well gaurded. Its funny...when you drive out there ..if you look hard enough you see snipers sitting on hills ready to shoot. As for your question...no ..I really don't think I will ever experience terrorism...but who knows?

I sell in Manhattan 2-3 days a week, so, yes, I get a bit nervous at times, especially when I'm crossing the bridges or tunnels. But I wouldn't say I actively worry about it. I'm a bit reassured (but not much) by the presence of all those soldiers with rifles at the entrances to the city.

larc, freedom was not saying that he is living in fear of any kind of attack. In fact, as far as our daily life goes, it is not even in the picture. He is simply asking what others feel about it ( as a topic of conversation). He has nothing to "get over" as you put it on the subject, nor does he or any member of our family live in fear. Just clearing up an obvious misunderstanding on your part of what he is asking/saying and to clarify, I am not trying to be argumentative with you on the matter.
