What are some of the red flags that should alert people to the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses are a high control and damaging religion?

One that comes to mind is

    1. One cannot leave Jehovah's Witnesses with one's reputation intact.

If you know a teaching is wrong, you will be in serious trouble for saying so and proving it!

Example: years ago I pointed out the org's "wrong thinking" re John 5:28,29 - that resurrected ones will commit evil deeds. Didn't go down well with fellow JW's - especially the "spiritually strong" elders.

Surprise, surprise!!! September 2022 Study Watchtower article, page 18, paragraph 14, (this week's study) reveals a wondrous 'new light,' aka 'reversal of doctrine.'

The Guardians of Doctrine now say this: "In the past, we understood Jesus’ words to refer to the deeds the resurrected ones will practice after their resurrection."

When they tell you to lie to your wife and sneak out of the house so she won't know you are studying with them because she thinks they are a dangerous cult and is an 'opposer' and it is causing severe marital problems.

When you choose to spend nearly all your time trying to win favor with the cong instead of enjoying the family you have and seeing and knowing about your own children.

When you know what grade someone in the kh is in but not your own child.

When they are suspicious of you for wanting to see the old books/mags because your spouse has told you exactly what is in them and you want to see for yourself, naturally you don't look because the elder talks you out of it.

When you go to a party to see old friends but you act like such a weirdo they wonder and ask spouse what is wrong with them.

When you dispose of certain clothes because someone told you to.

When you can no longer have actual discussions with family and have to move any discussions to emails because any discussions get to heated and don't end well.

When you are willing to go against peoples parental rights and wishes (as well as the gb) and preach at other peoples children without consent and in secret.

When at a family holiday you have to run away to the bathroom when dinner time prayers are said or someone has a gift to open.

I could go on but will allow space for others!

Warning new bible studies that they will face opposition from family and friends for studying with the JW's - "It's a Satanic attack from your family, and none of your family's or friends cult concerns are relevant..."

Do Jehovah’s Witnesses Have Their Own Bible?

Jehovah’s Witnesses have used many different translations in their study of the Bible. In languages where it is available, though, we especially appreciate the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures for its use of God’s name, for its accuracy, and for its clarity.

    • Use of God’s name. Some Bible publishers have failed to give credit where credit is due. For example, one Bible translation lists the names of over 70 people who in some way contributed to its production. Yet, this same Bible omits the name of the Author—Jehovah God—altogether!

In contrast, the New World Translation restores the divine name in the thousands of places where it existed in the original text, while the committee that produced the translation remains anonymous.

    • Accuracy. Not all translations accurately convey the Bible’s original message. One translation, for instance, renders Matthew 7:13 in this way: “Go in through the narrow gate, because the gate to hell is wide and the road that leads to it is easy.” However, the original text used the term “destruction,” not “hell.” Perhaps the translators inserted the word “hell” because they believed that the wicked would be tormented forever in hellfire. But that idea is not supported by the Bible. Hence, the New World Translation reads accurately: “Go in through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road leading off into destruction.”

    • Clarity. A good translation should be not only accurate but also clear, easy to understand. Consider an example. At Romans 12:11, the Christian apostle Paul used an expression that literally means “to the spirit boiling.” Since that expression makes little sense in modern English, the New World Translation renders the verse in a way that is easier to understand. It says that Christians should be “aglow with the spirit.”

In addition to its use of God’s name, accuracy, and clarity, the New World Translation has another distinction: It is distributed without charge. As a result, millions are able to read the Bible in their mother tongue—even those who otherwise could not afford to own a Bible.
