8 Now I say to the unmarried persons and the widows, it is well for them that they remain even as I am. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to be inflamed [with passion].

    I Corinthians 7:8,9

Oh right! Make a life-long commitment to someone because you're just so damn horny and frustrated! How fair is that to your new husband/wife? No all-wise, all-knowing god would give advice as bad as this. Even my Dad would know better!

    Hi'

How would it be possible for someone(thing) not existing to inspire anything?

As my good ol' friend Richard Dawkins puts it:

"To explain the origin of the DNA/protein machine by invoking a supernatural Designer is to explain precisely nothing, for it leaves unexplained the origin of the Designer. You have to say something like "God was always there", and if you allow yourself that kind of lazy way out, you might as well just say "DNA was always there", or "Life was always there", and be done with it."

What I don't understand is that:

What logic is in a loving all knowing god creating a world that ends up being not that filled with love. If he is all knowing he should have been able to predict this shouldn't he (or she or whatever).

And if Adam and Eve where perfect then I'm not sure I want to be perfect. There weren't even able to follow a few simple rules.

Just for the record I'm not an angry, bored idiot that hates everything - it might sound that way. On the contrary I beleive in and look for the good in everyone - even my JW family-in-law ;)

    Take care

I want to say I'm a Christian believer. But when it comes down to it, the Bible is a collection of writings, and we do not have the originals for ANY of them. While what we know as the Bible is the accepted version, there were other books that were left out at the decision of a council. And even the books that were accepted are sometimes a hodge-podge of multiple versions of the same books. Who knows what the original text was? And what is missing? The Bible refers to other books that we do not have.

Yet I believe. And I believe that it's possible that our Creator guided the assemblance of these books into a Bible. And if not complete or original, at least he may have guided them into a "good-enough" form.

But I'm also open-minded. Keeping in mind that a council picked and chose what it wanted to call the Bible. It decided among several writings which were and were not to be included and which versions were correct when differences occurred. With the history of man-made decisions made in the name of God, there's a plausible argument that could be made that they did not get it right. After all, what makes them any different from the Governing Body in picking and choosing what JWs are presented with?

Do I believe the Bible is inspired?....ah, I don't think so.

Do I think it has some good stuff in it?.....yeah, I guess.

Do I think it also has some rediculous stuff in it?....definitely! (The one about proving you are a faithful wife by drinking a potion takes the cake. Of course her husband had all the privilages of having a P****S between your legs brings with it).

The Bible is a book written by middle eastern men (got a clue?) to try to offer an explanation of what they did not understand. It contains all the bigatry of their day. Even today its still the same in the middle east. One of the reasons they are still living the way they do is because half their population has been stiffled. I repeat....its only one of the reasons why.

OK, I've said enough......y'all have a nice day

I really lost my faith in the bible when we started studying the orange book. It talked about the science of the bible (pure garbage), how it had been faithfully copied through the ages (by men who did and did not make changes), and how acurate the prophesies are (even though many were or could have been written after the fact). Thank you Watchtower for giving me a book that opened my eyes.

As much as I like and admire Ray Franz, I've got to say I'm dissappointed the intelligence and critical thinking skills he obviously possesses did not cause him to question the Bible in addition to the WT Society. Some of his comments sound like they could have come right out of a JW publication, although I did think his letter was a tad more intellectually honest than the latest organizational drivel.

Two things drove me away from the JWs and the Bible: 1) the fact that archaeology and science have consistantly shown that it is grossly mistaken about a multitude of matters and 2) the insane bloodshed rampant throughout the OT in "history" and the NT in it's ideology and future outlook (the Apocalypse). Much of the "godly" advice that's in the Bible can be found in other narratives. Take a look at the works of the Buddha, Lau Tzu, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Socrates. Many of their teachings are on par or superior to the Bible. Ray takes a dim view of philosophy, even though I've found that the rational and humanistic philosophers are on a higher intellectual and moral level than what Jesus supposedly taught.

I've often said that it was easier for me to lose faith in the Bible than it was to lose faith in the organization. I don't know if anyone else feels that way, but it was definitely true in my case.
