It seems to me to be a very big victory. It leaves WT no where to go in its fight not disclose the child molestation records. This was the case where WT clocked up enormous daily fines and lost the case but still did not disclose.

I don't know what this means in that case but it looks (to me) that those records have to come out or WT is in a very big and deep hole.

If I have this wrong I apologise but maybe someone with legal knowledge could clarify.

I was actually a bit surprised that the Org really tried this...

...after all, if you poke the SCOTUS bear with a stick and lose, that's it.

    There's no do-overs.

    ...

The only reasons I can think of for the Org being crazy-slash-desperate enough to take the risk are...

    a) ...the pedobase is even more damning than we suspected...

    b) ...they really are deluded enough to think that God's got their back no matter what, or...

    c) ...they'd rather the Org crash-and-burn from the inevitable disclosure-related fallout then budge.

    ...

    I could be wrong.

    Vidiot...I'll go with

    a) ...the pedobase is even more damning than we suspected...

One reason why WT's pedobase may be soo damning is because Ted Jaracz may be on it among other top WT brass!

I hope Jaracz is on it, along with fellow pillow biters like Gary Breaux. I can’t even believe the Jaracz thing isn’t getting more coverage...

Is it because we just aren’t shocked anymore?

Data-Dog - "...I can’t even believe the Jaracz thing isn’t getting more coverage... Is it because we just aren’t shocked anymore?"

Nah, probably more of a wait-and-see thing...

...maybe because it's potentially so much more "smoking-gun" than anything before.

    I could be wrong.

Exactly what is this "Ted Jaracz " - "smoking- gun" thing ? Can somebody elaborate ?

There have been strong rumors for years that Ted Jaracz was removed from his position in the Australian Branch for sexually molesting a child. Years later a woman, in a protest outside one of the Society's properties, accused him of molesting her years prior. She later died and the matter went nowhere.

After being dismissed from the Australian Branch Jaracz later became a Governing Body member.

The rumors persist but there is still no hard proof. The suspicion is that his name may be on the data base of child molester information that the Organization has compiled.

And, what's more, that he - as a GB member - was an instrumental figure in keeping the scope of the problem quiet, and that the rest of the GB were fully aware of this.

This particular aspect of the allegations are strongly supported by previous anecdotal reports that internal efforts to improve the situation (by Barb Anderson and others in the 1990s) were staunchly opposed - and interfered with - by Jaracz.

    Thanks Vidiot for the info.

One of the biggest criticisms that Watchtower has had against the Catholic Church, re the pedophile priest issue, is that the priests are not removed as priests but are simply reassigned. If the Jaracz issue is ever proven it would be a huge black eye on Watchtower because it not only reassigned Jaracz, but appointed him to the highest position in the Watchtower organization, the Governing Body.

Not that most JWs would ever be aware of it, since the information they get is so heavily controlled by Watchtower, but some would. The dollar amount of court judgments would would likely go up as well.

I tend to agree with an above comment that Watchtower will never release that database, even when court ordered. They would rather reach settlements with plantiffs. Even if they have to pay high settlement amounts it's better than if the database was known to have Jaracz or other high ranking Watchtower officials' names on it - that would be even more devastating to the Organization on a few levels.

    Agreed, they'll never "release" it...

...but that doesn't mean it won't come out some day soon.

This is the Information Age, after all. :smirk:
