Misty has been sent the link to this thread. Hopefully when she is up to it she will come to read all your wonderful thoughts to her and the family

Thanks Lady Lee, I was going to suggest the same thing so she could read the thoughts people have shared about her father. I'm sure she knew her dad's life touched many others but it doesn't hurt to read what people say.

(((( Misty )))) I've never met you and don't know who you are but I can appreciate your loss.

I did not know Tortured Soul, I wish I had. His willingness to comfort others is evident in his poetry. I will share some of what he has sent to Lew. Thank you Tortured Soul, for touching someone close to me. For the pain that shows in the name you have chosen, I am sorry, you will be missed.

A thank you from Tortured Soul:

In another time, another place.. I looked into a strangers face..
with eyes so dark, they pierced the soul..
    demanding total self control..

He stood there, with his silent ways..
was thinking, he's seen better days..
    outside the VA's local center..
shivering from the cold of winter..

He asked for nothing, stopped and stared..
feeling as if no one cared.
Who is this man? well, it could be..
the brave one, who defended me..

How did it ever get this way?
    He's paid a price, we can't repay..
But what they get now in return..
a lesson, very hard to learn..

In Vietnam, there was a war..
that never could we know the score..
and there, so many lives were lost..
    politically unjust...the cost..

I looked again, and bowed my head..
and know just what I should have said..
Thank you..for this thing you've done..
    even though, nobody won..

This one refering to the price of freedom:

I watched the flag pass by one day.
    It fluttered in the breeze.
    A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
Hair cut straight and eyes alert,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
    Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
    How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
    How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
    No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
    When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
    And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
    That taps had meant 'Amen,'
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
    Of fathers, sons and husbands
    With interrupted lives.

    I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
    Of unmarked graves in Arlington..
    No freedom isn't free.

    Ron

    (((Misty & Family)))

Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences. I did not know your father, but from what I have read, he was a wonderful person with an extreme talent for expressing himself. May this be a time for remembering the good times and also the beginning of the healing process.

    With Love

(((((Misty))))) - i'm so, so, sorry to hear this. Those quiet poems your father wrote and his thoughtfulness to others will be a fitting testament to his memory and beautiful soul.

    It's so terribly sad.
