BAGHDAD (Reuters) - One U.S. Army soldier has been killed and four others wounded in an attack in the north of Baghdad, military officials say.

An Army interpreter was also wounded in the latest of a series of guerrilla-style attacks against the occupying forces, a spokeswoman reported on Saturday.

The soldiers were from a regiment of the First Armoured Division in the Sadr City district of Baghdad, she said.

One military officer said the incident on Friday night was a grenade attack but no official confirmation was available.

Another U.S. soldier was shot in the head and critically wounded while shopping in a Baghdad store for digital video disks on Friday.

The latest death brings to 22 the number of U.S. military personnel killed by hostile fire in Iraq since President George W. Bush declared major combat over on May 1.

A further six British soldiers were shot dead on Tuesday in southern Iraq.

Until the U.S.-led invasion toppled former Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein in April, Sadr City was known as Saddam City.

The sprawling, working-class district is home to a large number of Shi'ite Muslims and Kurds and not known for being particularly fierce in opposing the occupation forces.

Re: Another US Death, Why Dont They Leave?

I was not around for the majority of the war threads but I must agree with Dansk, I see no further argument which could possibly come to light except that of feelings being hurt or anger.

You seem to ignore the fact the article mentions 6 British soldiers who were killed as well, why only mention "another US death" then?

The blood shown is a mothers, fathers, sons, sister or brothers. Regardless of that fact, whomevers blood, US, British or Iraqi it is still a human loss of life which someone is suffering greatly over now.

They should leave Iraq now, to avoid more bloodshed.

Of course, Bush and Blair are not bothered as they are not the ones fighting and dying.

Fallacy : Churchill won the war

Fact : The guys that fought won the war.

Yeah, I'm sure the US and UK leaving right now will promote peace in Iraq. All we need is another fundamentalist regime taking over in the region.

    dansk,

why do you click on these threats if you don't like them?

    ISP,

if the US would leave now the country would fall apart and an endless civil war would start (like afghanistan).

there is no good way to get out of this mess but the US leaving now would perhaps be the worst option for the region.

    Hamas,

there were only two winners of WWII. roosevelt and stalin!

    dansk,

I NEVER click on these threads usually! However, this one was started by my mate, ISP

He likes to wind people up and most fall for it. Thought I'd just nip in and wind him up for a change!

That said, I still think the war threads are useless. If someone wants to have a go at the American government what on earth do you think a bunch of xjws from this list can achieve? All such posts do is aggravate some of our American friends here. What's good about that?

Didn't Simon say he wasn't going to allow such threads again, or am I mistaken?

I haven't said I won't allow then but did ask (some time ago) if we could limit them. During the war itself the topic did take over a bit too much.

I hope America (and Britain) doesn't pull out until the work is complete and the country is stable. The quicker that real improvements are delivered then the sooner the poor people can put their lives back together and the less likely attacks like this will be

if the US would leave now the country would fall apart and an endless civil war would start (like afghanistan).

erm ... last I heard the US was still there !

The departure of the U.S. at this time would be a tacit admission that the War to Free Iraq had failed. Besides, a "democratic" (read: U.S. approved) form of government hasn't yet been put in place. Although the country spirals into yet another Vietnam for allied troops, I'm afraid there won't be any withdrawal any time soon regardless of how many servicemen die in sniper attacks. Get used to it.
