LOL:!!!! That is too funny! And I was there!

One newly baptized sister was chasing her kids around the place in the 100 degree heat, when she confided in me that the woman with whom she had studied told her, when she complained, that she should be grateful because Jehovah loved us so much that he was getting us ready for Armegeddon with all the suffering at the District Conventions.

I was appalled. I told her, "NOTHING is going to get us ready for Armgegeddon. And I guess Jehovah doesn't love the sisters at the X Convention. They are sitting in airconditioning right now."

I was at the Rose Bowl too, 7 years old. That was miserable, especially the closing comments that dragged on, because Mom and Dad had decided to get a "head start" for the exit, to avoid some of the traffic, so we ended up standing for the overtime. NOT my favorite memory!

Here's an Aussie story: My parents and I lived in Nhulunbuy, in the Northern Territory, from 1970-1973, and we attended a circuit assembly in Mt. Isa. It was outdoors, very hot, with loads of these huge Australian biting flies. My poor dad, who was giving one of the talks, got one stuck in his glasses where it happily bit him for almost half an hour. When Dad complained about it afterward, the local brothers told him it was perfectly appropriate under such circumstances to stop the talk, take off his glasses, remove the fly, and then continue. The best thing about that assembly was in the evening, at sunset, when huge flocks of pink galah cockatoos would fly overhead. An amazing sight!

Then there was the district convention in Darwin in 1972, I think, which was held at a school's outdoor auditorium. A stray dog wandered in and found a whole bunch of really bored people who were willing to feed him, and then hide him from the attendants who were trying to get him out. I think the attendants actually caught him a couple of times, but they put him in the men's room to keep him out of the way. The dog would get out the next time someone went into the loo, and it would start all over again. He was a smart dog -- when he saw an attendant badge, he knew to duck down and move to another aisle! That was a great distraction!

Plum---- the first Convention held at Long Beach was 1995.......A/C yes! Before that we at Dodger Stadium. The only reason I remember that '94 was our last year there was because I was married to my ex then. He went beforehand to get the seats for us in the shade and then his sister and I would come later on. It would get so hot that the elderly ones would pass out!!!!! .............. I did go to Twickenham, in England, one year and that was an outdoor stadium and it rained! We had to sit there with our umbrellas up and freeze our butts off.

I was at the Rose Bowl too that year. I remember the umbrellas for the sun on some days and the rain on others. We missed the rainy day when the water flowed down the bleacher seats like a waterfall. We had plenty of water and sunscreen because we were all fair; we had mister bottles too. We wore sunhats and light clothing that would reflect the sun and help the perspiration dry. Good thing we were kids then.

i guess i had it easy because mine never were to bad. all of them were indoors. been to midwest in memphis tn. and the one in littlerock........ some how that seems to have been mid south. and mostly myriad gardens in oklahoma city and now in tulsa. all of them were indoors and one time they had construction going on in okc and so the air could escape and thus it got real warm but still not over 80 so aint no way imma gonna cry. even went to shreveport la once or was that monroe.......... i forget i was like 10 at the time. mostly the sisters complain about it being to cold and when i was an attendant they gave us the standard answer......... and we were either to just say something non commital or say that the thermostat is set to 75 which was the societys standard and they dont budge for anyone lol do they

Yes, I could never understand why they used to keep us couped up in a football stadium for three of the hottest days in summer !

I remember one year, we decided to sit right at the top, and for the first two days, we were absolutely froozen because of the draft encircling the stadium ! For the thrid day, we decided to sit near the pitch, where we boiled alive under the extreemly hot weather. I used to hate those big conventions, everybody trying to walk around with happy faces and all the young people getting increasingly desperate to hitch up with somebody ; eventually they would take anybody that they could.

Towards the end of my reign as a Dubya, our venue was moved to an Ice Rink. However, I feel the heat was even worse !

Man, am I glad I escaped the Watchtower !

The District Conventions were always inside with decent A/C but I remember going to International assemblies in the late 60s and 70s. 1968 in Atlanta, 7 days, in the old baseball stadium. Atlanta in June/July? What the hell were they thinking? Baseball at night was hot enough, but to sit in the scorching sun, in meeting clothes, for not two sessions, but three sessions a day was absolute torture.

I got heat-stroke at Twikenham (big London stadium DA) one year. I was about 14, and went for a second Sunday (oh lucky me) as my did was doing something or the other. I was on the old North stand bleachers in direct sun for the whole afternoon, in smart clothes. It must have been about 90 degrees.

After, they sold off the plants, and my dad bought some, and we were taking them to the car. There was a family I knew in the entrance of the car park, and on about the third trip I was carrying some bloody triffid, and as I walked by them I came over all peculiar. I had to time to politely ask the mum of the family to hold the triffid for me before I passed out.

I came to in First Aid.

    Ah, the good old days!

I baked along in Atlanta in 1968 and 1973. Those were the two worst that I remember. After that all my assemblies were in the Jacksonville or Macon Coliseum which were nice and cool, but I still hated sitting still.
