I know its safer to wear those damned things - but I hate it.
Its painful in my neck and oncomfortable - so I have a "pincher" on my belt to prevent irritation on my skin - (and sometimes I just trew the belt over my knees and nobody can see that's its not fixed).
Going on the highway - I'm wearing the belt and little children must be wearing a belt too - nobody is allowed to put others in danger.
But in my opinion the use of belts should be free for each (adult) person.
seat belt laws !!!!!!! argh!!!!

Cassi I remember that movie,,,I think the woman in it , ended up marrying her doctor didnt she. I can't think of who the actress was.........she had blonde hair I think,,,,,,I know not a big help. ( Linda Pearle?)
Yes, I believe she did marry him. I felt so bad for that woman and to this day am amazed at how he was able to have her face almost appear as it did prior to the wreck. I realize a lot of makup was used yet she looked great. I also remember the jokes that were told at her expense because of how he did it.

Simon,
I believe a number of children are killed each year in the US from air-bag inflations because they are much more powerful than in the UK
Automakers developed depowered airbags and began installing them in 1998 to protect women and children from the bag's force. Regulations now call for "smart" airbags to be phased in by 2003, which can tailor deployment based on crash severity, occupant size and position, or seatbelt use.
Until then it is recommended by the US federal government, and mandated by law in many states that children be in the back seat.
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/kids/research/airbag/
THE AIRBAG SAFETY CHECK LIST
- Children 12 and under (including newborns and toddlers) should ride buckled up in a rear seat. Parents should use child safety seats, booster seats or safety belts appropriate for their age and size.
- Infants must ride in the rear-facing child seats securely fastened in the back seat of the car. Parents may be tempted to put babies in the front seat of the car don't do it. The place for children is, and always has been, in the back seat.
http://www.state.de.us/highway/airbag.htm#air%20bag%20law
An example of a state law (Delaware):
DELAWARE'S AIR BAG LAW
Delaware law prohibits any child under the age of 12 and 65 inches from sitting in the front seat of a vehicle equipped with a passenger side air bag. Only if the rear seating positions in the vehicle are already occupied by children under 12 and 65 inches, may a child in that age range sit in the front seat. In this situation, parent should let the oldest child, or the child with the best upper body strength, sit in the front seat. They should push that seat as far back from the air bag as possible, and make sure that the child is buckled in with a lap and shoulder belt.

lol@ abaddon. I guess none of you were harrassed over this as I have been . I do wear my seat belt because it is something that was discussed in the defensive driving manual .I've had cops accusing me of not wearing it just to write me a ticket . I did take a defensive driving class that told stories and showed stuff about what happens in accidents when people don't wear them it's pretty gruesome stuff but I still don't think it should be a law. Actually I don't know how some people get their license to begin with. I can't see how someone can sue the state because they were not wearing a seat belt. I bet it had something to do with the insurance companies pushing the law thru. To me it's nothing but harrassment .

Please wear your seat belt....
Here is a story from the local paper....
A woman who died after a car crash this week has been identified as a 44-year-old from Johnstown.
Joanne Thompson’s car was struck from behind by a sportutility vehicle as she slowed for stopped eastbound traffic along I-670 near Cassady Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Thompson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from her car and pinned underneath it when it rolled over several times.
The SUV was driven by Catherine Kang, 34, of Gahanna.
Columbus police Lt. Karl Barth was coincidentally sitting in traffic at the time.
Barth, a former emergency medical trainer and U.S. Navy hospital corpsman, said he ran to help, along with a nurse from another car who found that Thompson had a weak pulse.
A State Highway Patrol trooper also arrived within seconds, along with a doctor.
The men and other motorists helped roll the vehicle off Thompson just as ambulances arrived.
"We shoved the car over on its side to get the pressure off of her," Barth said.
Thompson died at Grant Medical Center nearly three hours later. Kang was not injured.
Charges had not been filed yesterday. The accident remains under investigation.
"We had quite a few things working in her favor," Barth said of Thompson. "But it wasn’t enough."
This woman was thrown from her car, pinned underneath it and died from her injuries. There were medical people in the traffic who helped; she still died.
Seat belts save lives. If it takes a law to get people to do it, I am for it.
My mother and sister were both involved in head on collisions about 8 years ago. Both were at a stop lights and were hit head on by other drivers. Both had seat belts on. No air bags in their cars.
They lived. If they had not been wearing them, they would be dead.
Some people have to be protected from themselves.

I get very angry when I see a parent driving with their child clearly not in a seat belt, literally all over the car.
Makes me wish I was a cop and could do something about it. I would put the fear into those parents without question.

I always wore seatbelts, even before it became mandatory. It has saved me from serious injury, perhaps death on 3 separate occasions.
Now that they have laws to enforce the dumb people, to wear seat belts, I think they should introduce laws for the dumb people to use condoms!

Seat belts, are one of those things people are initially not happy about.
But...honestly, I could not get in a car without putting them on.
Having been a traffic accident, I'm glad I had mine on, or I would have been sailing from the backseat and over the front seat out the front windshield.
They do save lives. It has been documented internationally.
Seat Belts have been mandatory here in Ontario since the mid-1970s.
Most fatal accidents occur within a short distance from home; you may be a good driver....BUT....it's the other driver you have to be concerned with. You just never know.....
And a drunk driver: well....I can tell you from personal experience, they don't discriminate.
Wear them, and Rayzorblade will feel better, knowing you are all safe.

Yeah I guess some of us don't want seat belt laws. Just let us alone. We could extend this to suicides also. If your child, brother, sister, mother, is on a bridge and about to jump, we don't want the police to interfere with his choice.
If we don't want to use seat belts and an accident severly damages us. We don't care if the costs of everyones insurance rises. Or if we don't like seat belts, do we also not like insurance? Just let the county pick it up.
We set the example for our kids and others. My kid died due to not using seat belt in his car. He got that from me. Aren't I proud?
It is sad, that the government has to regulate, to save us from ourselves.
Not using seat belts, driving recklessly, without regard for speed laws and other people. Are often a part of a persons personality and respect for others or lack of respect for others. It may indicate that we do not have respect for ourselves.
It amazes me, how some of us feel so against letting the government do anything to control us, that we will put ourselves in danger of death, to defy them over something so miniscule as a seat belt.
Outoftheorg= ok you can yell at me now.
